If I remember correctly the only difference was one is chromed the other isn't, I have the Super Premium on mine, just some more chrome to blind Skip with.
I have the premium one. A lot of people dont believe they do any good but they do. Unfortunately they dont do much in stop and go traffic. The super was not available when I got mine but if it had been I would have gone with it. Fact is ,it does have a larger cooling area and so is more than chrome. Either can be had with a chrome cover.
That was a good question, I have been wondering the same thing. Looking at them in the book there does not appear to be that much difference except in price. If the super premium cooler is bigger, does anyone know just how much bigger it is?
I got the premium oil cooler. My dealer did some tests for temperature and oil flow on both coolers. I was told not to buy the more expensive cooler because there was no measurable difference based on their tests. The test showed a 25 degree reduction in oil temp. Even stopped in traffic getting the oil out of the case will reduce temp.
How about that, a dealer recommending a less expensive HD part when I was willing to pay. Based on the test results I saw I would not have an TC88 without a oil cooler.
My bike, as almost all bikes, is only excessively hot at stop lights. What is the point of a cooler if is only cools when moving?
There is still oil moving through the cooler which is out in front of the motor where there is cooler air, the cooler increases the volume of oil a tad, and since the oil is running cooler when you are moving, it will buy you some time when you get into the stop-and-go situations as well as cooling your oil down quicker when you get up to speed again.
I suppose if I lived in the southwest, I'd consider one. However, here in Penna, an oil cooler might do more harm than good. I also understood that the more expensive oil cooler incorporated a thermostat which could bypass the cooler until it was needed. That, to me, would be pretty important letting the engine oil warm up quickly. My service manager told me to save my $$ - just not needed on these TC88's. I bought more chrome instead. [8D]
