I rode into work this morning and my co-worker was looking for my helmet on my desk to see if I rode in. I told him, I leave the helmet on the handle bars. We have a secure facility here and we both agreed that it probably wouldn't get stolen at work, but I do the same where ever I go.
What is the probability that my helmet will get stolen?
Has anyone had their helmet stolen?
I just can't see lugging my helment in the gym, through the mall, and every where else I go. Personally, I wouldn't want to wear someone elses helmet. I live in Texas and we sweat!!! Putting your head in someone elses helmet would just be nasty!
Additionally, what about the Road King Classic saddle bags. Since you can't lock them, and they cost a pretty penny. It seems like they should be a hot item.
Have anyone heard of the saddle bags being stolen?
People will steal anything. I had a 1983 Mazda 323 in the loading dock of my shop, and someone stole the factory original stereo out of it. It was worth maybe 5 bucks. Don't leave anything that someone else can take..
I had a pair of gloves stolen off my seat once, but it was nighttime at a bar. As for the RK Classic saddlebags, check Lock Your Leathers. HD makes one for the RK Custom bags.
I never worry about helmets. Always leave them on the bike unless it is very cold outside (I hate putting on a cold helmet). Most of the places I go are frequented by a lot of bikers and everyone watches out for each other's stuff. [sm=shootshoot.gif]

If you've got a real nice fairly expensive helmet I would lock it up. Mine is a couple years old and I only paid 40 bucks for it. So I'm not too concerned about it getting stolen.
Once had a helmet stolen from in front of a Yamaha dealer. That said now a days if it is at a "biker friendly" location I will leave it on the handlebars. Most other public places I take it with me or lock it up. More chance of a jacket being taken though I would think. A helmet being such a personal item is less likely to be taken I would think, unless it was a very expensive model or one with extreme or custom graphics. When I had my RKC (R.I.P.) I would often times run a cable lock thru my helmet, thru the sleeves of my jacket then thru my detachable backrest and finally thru the spokes on my back wheel if I was going to be away from my bike for more than a few minutes.
As for the bags on a RK Classic or Custom I would think only a professional thief would know their value and try to take them. A leather jacket on the other hand could be attractive to some punk kid with nothing better to do who might pass by and grab it just because he could.
I live in an area where I never lock my doors on my house and only rarely on my vehicles. A few years back someone forced my locked cap (called a "topper" in some parts of the country ) open on the back of my truck and took a pair of high-top basketball shoes. These were shoes that had been exposed to quite a bit of disgusting foot sweat! You just never know.
I worry about "stuff" being stolen and have been pretty careful so far ... I did just order the lockset for my RKC bags (about $145 from Zanotti) ... and will start locking up my helmet and gloves (I currently carry them). And, being a bit paranoid, I also just purchased the HD siren and pager ...
Had a helmet stolen from those little under-the-seat hooks one time... They cut the helmet strap to take the helmet. Not sure what good the helmet then was without the strap, but since then I always assume thieves steal because they're low-lifes, not necessarily because they want your stuff...
