Default Will insurance cover accessories?

After reading the post about insurance I wondered how well the insurance usually covers accessoriesor upgrades? How well do you need them documented? Does your insurance company need to have a list prior to any claim? Well, maybe that was three questions!

Progressive insurance will. Many companies will not pay for them that's why I went with Progressive.

From what I understand it is a very difficult process to get some insurers to pay.

This is from 1st hand expeience. Dairyland has optional accessories coverage. I had $ 5000.00 coverage on my accessories. I totalled the bike in May and the insurance covered everything except my deductible and the depreciation of the bike. I was out $700.00 total. I had the stage II kit in it with the diamond cut jugs, SE pipes and lots of other chrome. The bike had 2500 miles on it when it went down. I had all my receipts for everything that I bought and put on it as well. So I figure I came out ok. I got 2500 miles of riding and it cost me $700.00 bucks. Sure, I wished it would have covered 100%, but I do not know of any insurance company that is going to do that unless you have GAP insurance which I did not have. Just my 2 cents though.

Like stated above you must declare and pay for any adders over and above your stock bike. I am with progressive as well. They will pay for the replacement cost of the bike at it's cureent value plus $1000 for accessories and riding apparrel. Over and above that you are on your own unless you pay the extra to cover the extra.

I just asked that question to my insurance company (GEICO).

They will insure accessories up to 1/3 of MSRP (for me that would be about $6K in accessories). And they do require a list of those accessories.

Well I am an insurance agent. Regardless of what your insurance company says they will cover I would recommend documenting each and every mod you make to your bike. Take a picture and keep the receipt for any parts/accessories. In the event of a loss will not take your word for it that you had the accessory... they will ask you to show proof.

This is what I had to do on my accident. I had all the documentation on everything that I had done to the bike and all the accessories I had put on it. Having all that in hand already helped me alot. My case was closed in less than 30 days from the day of the accident. I thought I came out pretty good.
