I've had PC3's in the past and my current bike came with a SERT.
I'm soon to go with a Thundermax + Auto-Tune. After much research that one seems to be the way to go, but it's kinda pricey.
If I were getting a new fuel management system and didn't have experience with any of them...I go with the PC3. It's very user friendly and there are lots and lots of canned maps already available for download on their website. If you go with V&H pipes you can get one dialed in close enough for gub'ment work.
As others have pointed out, installation on these is pretty simple (really, almost plug-n-play to a degree) except for the SERT. You might consider doing it yourself and saving a wad of cash for other bling.
All the fuel management components "technically" void the warranty. Even the SERT. My dealer has an unofficial policy to "look the other way" as long as the itemand map keeps engine performance within safe ranges.
Alright, so I'm just off the phone with Adam from V&H. He just gave me the download for the BUB #7, SE A/C set up. He said that the download will work perfect. He was shocked that the dealer would say that to a customer but then said they would want to make money on the SERT.
I've used a Power Commander on all of my sport bikes before. This is my first Harley. I was going to go with the Fuel Pak because a friend has one on his Harley and really likes it. I will of course be putting whatever I get in by myself. I could maybe see them trying to make a point. I will look into a PC III and Thundermax too.
Funny story now!!! My dealer just called me back to tell me that they contacted Vance and Hines and the Fuel Pak WILL work with the set up. They said that they just wanted to make sure for me so they contacted Vance and Hines instead of me hoping that it would work. Even though I told them that I contacted them in the first place. At this........I laugh.
Like everyone else has said, "do it yourslef". It's a very easy install and set up is a breeze. Save the money for some other overpriced H-D chrome part I'm sure someone on this forum lives close enough to you to help you if you really don't think you can do it. But we have faith!
Having worked for a HD dealer a few years back (about the time the SERT) was introduced I can tell you they love to sell those things and charge you dearly for the dyno time which by the way if you don't dyno during the install you have truly wasted alot of money. If you aren't going to be doing any engine work then I would say go with the Fuel Pak. Works great for pipes, air cleaner mods and dials in the ratios that you need. I have one on my new 08 Ultra and it works like a charm. 10 minute installation at the max. Good luck.
