The new Document dated 02/12/08 recommends 80ft-lbs of torque on the compensator bowl hex bolts. And to those that have them torqued to 60ft-lbs, back them off and retighten to 80ft-lbs of torque. Whether your dealership will do this for you or not is beyond me.
Glad to know this, as I just received a new hub and rotor for my spare rear wheel, and haven't gotten around to installing them yet. When I remove the wheel that's on the bike I'll re-torque.
I picked up the service bulletin and its not for just the IDS.All 08 sprockets to wheels should be loosened and retorqued to 80ftlbs.Dont know if its something specific to just 08 wheels? It only mentions 08 Dynas,Softails, touring bikes,Sportsters and screaming eagle bikes.I was home before I read bulletin so dont know if it applys to earlier wheels.
It seems like if it pertained to previous year models it would specified it in the SB. As the owner of an '07 I'd like to know. I'll ask at my local shop next time I'm in the area.
anybody know why this would only apply to 08's? Isnt the IDS assembly the same?
I plan on installing mine tomorrow and I really don't want to take the wheel back off to retorque, on the other hand I don't want to snap a bolt from overtightening.
The Document was intended to correct the Service Manual for the '08, BUT since the IDS retrofits the '07's it also applies to the '07's torque values for the compensator bowl as well.
Tighten them to 2ft-lbs or a 10000000000ft-lbs, I'm done explaining.[sm=bangbang.gif][sm=headbang.gif]
A buddy of mine had his rear sprocket fall part way off on his 06 Street Glide. He had less than 1000 miles on it when it did. The dealer fixed everything but I know it spooked him going from 45mph to a stop when the back wheel locked up. They put loctite on the bolts as part of their fix. I have an 05 Eglide and since its alredy torn apart, I'm going to be taking the bolts out, making sure there is loctite on them and then be putting them back in with a 4 inch drive turbo powered impact cannon.
Since it applys to all 08 models not just IDS models I still wonder if its just the 08 wheels.I would think if it applyed to earlier models it would state that. Then again maybe there is a bulletin for the 07.I will try to make it to dealer tommorow
