hey mountainkowboy, you've got some super road up there in Twin Peaks and surrounding mountain communities. When I lived in San Berdoo, I used to ride up to Crestline, over to Lake Gregory and the back road over to San Moritz. Also loved riding around Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and Big Bear, 38 past Barton Flats, Forest Home.
A friend of mine is doing a six month mission for our church at the Girl's Camp in Big Bear. Thinking of riding down to visit them later on.
I picked up my new SG yesterday and it was 60 deg which was good but the wind was blowin like he**! But of course I had to ride anyway. Took the wife for a ride and she was freaked out and wanted to go back home. In late winter/early spring in KS the wind speed usually = the temps!
The wind also kills your gas mileage. I usually get around 40 mpg doing 70 to 80 mph. Today with all the winds I averaged around 35 mpgon a 490 mile ride.
We've got Santa Ana winds here in So Cal right now. My ride in to work tonite from the high desert mtns was a bit of a rush. Gusty winds between 30 and 50 mph I'd guess. The winds were hitting me from about the 2 0'clock position and knocked me around a couple times with the gusts. Otherwise the Electra Glide does pretty good in the wind. Once or twice it felt like my full face helmet was about to be pulled right off my head with a couple of those big gusts! Just stay loose and flow with it and no problem...
the worst thing about riding in the wind for me is my attitude. Left Texas panhandle yrs ago but wind followed to N. Tx area...not much better. We ride in all conditions, but just don't get real enjoyment in wind. So on windy days we stay close to home and find other things to do....what can we add to bike now???
Hmmm...based on this morning's ride I think I'll skip the commuting on the bike in the 60 MPH winds. I've avoided it for the most part but I thought I would try it this morning....bad idea. Felt like I was gonna share lanes a bit closer the I wanted too! Was a challenge to keep in my lane. Not worth the aggrivation.
Guess I'll take surface streets home. Didn't think the wind was going to be quite that bad. (wind in that section of freeway makes the cars slow to a crawl and tips trucks).
My daughter broke her arm last night so has had to swich cars with me. Guess I'll see how the Mini likes the wind [&:]
In regards to the gas milage issue I found raising the sail in my UC really improved my gas milage, almost shut the engine off once or twice, thought twice about that in case I needed to pass someone, of course I think my bike is well sandblasted for a new paint job now, darn more $$ to spend.
