For me at 5'10" with my solo seat on my FLHT with 12" rear shocks the 8" works great. When using dual standard seat the 10" is perfect allowing me to look over top of shield.
I'm 6' and the orginal wind deflector was nailing me right at my eyebrows. I had the dealer switch it for the light tint 9 1/2". The buffetting has moved up to the top of my helmet, out of my face. I like the coverage it gives me but still lets me see over the top.
I do notice now that I'm getting buffetting from below the fairing. I'm going to try the chrome deflectors next.

I went with the FastAir 6.5" dark tint shield on my SG, and like it. It moved the air flow to the top of my helmet, which doesn't really bother me at all. I'm 5'11" tall. BUT, like Ron says, I now have a very strong/annoying buffeting from below also. It's pushing my helmet around enough to cause blurry vision at high speeds. If I place my arm horizontal across my waist, it blocks the upwards wind. I've got to figure this one out...
I'm also 5'11" and went with the 6.5, works like a charm for me, even better with the Sidekick seat. Keep your seat in mind if you plan on switching it, may not need as high of a deflector.
I jusy put a 9" FastAir litely tinted windshield on my SG. I have not had the bike out with it being less then 10 degrees here, but I am pretty sure that it will work very well. It is not an issue with it not being pre-formed at all. It was very easy to put in. The thickness is the same as the stock HD one. Not to mention that you can not beat the price on it too.
Man for summer riding the stock shield is super and you keep the low lean look the SG was built for in my opinion. But in winter? You need the full shield. I was out Sat. it was 32 and windy and my face was frozen. I'm switchin out to the full shield until the weather breaks. I saw some on Ebay in the $20 range plus shipping, any feedback on the quality of these aftermarket shields? I bought one a few years ago and the quality was poor and scratched easy.
I am 5'10 and own a street glide the stock 4" windshield didn't do it for me anything over 50mph there was a lot of buffeting and blurred vision so I got a 7" from sinstatecycles I think for $30 and it works great you have to be careful because they scratch easily but at $30 you can just buy a new one.
