06 95" Upgrade Question(s)
I have a few questions about the upgrade I am currently contemplating. I have been around for awhile and do all of my own wrenching but need one of you “Smart” guys to look this over and give advice.
Here is the bike specifications:[/b]
06 FLHT (Carbureted) (Sorgy’s Jet Kit)
S&S Air Cleaner
Andrews 26G Cams
SE Adjustable Pushrods
Feuling Lifters
LMR2 Spring
Porker TDs/B&E Superflows
Riding Style:
[/b]Usually conservative on the throttle. 70% Highway, 20% 2up Highway, 10% “Other”. I do ride a lot, 20k last 12 months.
Goals:[/b] More passing power, especially 2up. Not interested in drag racing, never see the rev limiter (OK once in a while coming home from the Biker Bar) ;-) Good Highway performance at or slightly above normal flow.
Plans:
[/b]95” upgrade
Question(s):
[/b]I am thinking about some minor Street type head work. The question is, would an increase in valve size really do much for me given this is really a mild build and by no means are funds unlimited? Also should I even be looking at any type of Ignition upgrades?
Thanks
Here wait….I did it for you!

I selected this combination based on the same prerequisites you stated - torque, reliability, ease of tune and fun. Nothing is more satisfying then twisting the wick and getting instant response. My bike is set up solo and I spend a majority of my riding in the 2,000-4,000rpm range (the secondary roads here in Maine get tore-up bad each winter so it's rare that you can really haul *** without having to dodge potholes like a freakin' slalom course).
I'm waiting for Bean to finish the heads and cylinder boring and I'll have her back together - I'm figuring another couple weeks. Meanwhile I was able to do the rest of the mods in the garage using tools rented from Iron Horse (not to mention chaining my floorjack to the underside of my wife's 4WD as a press).
Let me know if yo have any questions and I can possibly save you a lot of research - CWO

Thanks for the look see at your plan.
I bought my scoot while overseas during my last trip to the sandbox. Still doing upgrades.
BTW: I almost used CWO in my screen name = Chief Warrant Officer..
I just got back from a WESTPAC deployment where I spent a lot of spare time researching all the available upgrades and decent machine shops. I lucked out in that one of the best shops - Big Boys - is located 20 miles from my house.
Was gone forriding season last summer and will be spending next summer in CENTCOM so I'm hoping that I can get her back on the road soon and ride the hell out of her soon - CWO

I have an take-off set of 06 heads and juggs that I am going to send off as soon as I decide on what to do. Less down time that way.

Then, compare that number with what you will have with a BigBoyz or other "street port" head job, machined cylinders, new pistons, etc.
You will probably discover that the price difference between the two is not great; however, the performance difference between the two IS significant.
My buddy did the 95", BigBoyz head build using SE 203 cams. We rode together recently whena third buddy on an EGC with HQ 113 rolled on the throttle leaving a red light on a limited access road. Well, the 113 just disappeared as we went WOT; but, to my surprise, my buddy on the 95" build didn't pass me and didn't get closer to me--my bike is a bone stock 88 '04 EG with HQ 0034 bolt in)cams, Rinehart TD's and SE a/c. The 95 dynoed at 92 hp and 98 ft-lbs torque. My bike dynos at low 80's go and 90 or so tq. The 95 had HQ-0034 cams installed last week-end and the 203's are history. I mention this story because I've also ridden with HQ 95" builds and they don't dissappear from me but they definitely are much faster.
If you talk to Doug or Kevin at HQ, they will tell you that the labor cost in their fully ported heads is about equal to the BigBoyz charge--the difference in the cost is in the better valves, valve springs, valve guides, seals, and locks.
I'm not knocking BigBoyz--they are good people and provide a product and service that many owners like and are happy with. But the difference in cost between a "street port" job and a full porting job is simply not very great considering the performance difference. And the HQ builds aren't "hot rods." They are just powerful, reliable, builds that deliver excellent mpg (over 40 mpg) and run cooler than the stock motor.
There are other shops that can supply fully ported heads and a reliable and proven package--HQ is certainly one to consider.
Good luck with what ever you choose, and thank you for your service.
