If you are looking to avoid mess... there is a way to cut an empty 2-liter soda bottle so that it catches all the oil. nice/handy/cheap way to keep things clean.
Here's a tip, if you take a good size piece of aluminum foil double it over , then slide it up under the filtercreasingthe end that sticks out to form a trough the oil will flow out and into your drain pan without any mess. Just be sure to get it all the way up tight to the filter mount. Then ball that sucker up and toss it when you are done. This helps the rubber motor mount last longer.
