Default lower back pain

Replaced stock seat with sundowner and put on the R.K. high bars. Been riding this set up for last few yrs. Now this year I'm finding I start to develop lower back pain after a short time. Have been thinking about putting on apes. I'm 5' 10". My thinking is the apes would help my posture. Anyone my heightswitch to apes to help with lower back pain and if so what size did you go to?
Any other suggestions to help back pain would be appreciated. Steve

Well, I'm no pro, but I don't get the apes... I'm 6'2" and replaced the bars with SE fat bars on my 08 FLHRC. The seat was important as well as the leg position. I'd like to know how the apes will help. i'd also consider a good belt.

Let me know what you find out.

I'm your height, added the backrest for me this Spring and would never go back. No stress on the back like last year. My bars are stock touring and no plans to change.

I have a herniated L-4 as well as some involvment of all discs L-2 through 5. The only time they act up on me is when I "slump" after being in the saddle for an hour or more. The straiter my posture, the better I feel and the longer I can ride comfortably. What I have found really helpfull is my "Hardas" back support which I bought from a vendor at the International Motorcycle Show back in January when it came to New York City. Otherwise my stock Electra Glide handlebars and seat seem just fine. This bike has fit me perfectly right from the start. Perhaps a seat upgrade is in my future, but for now thesaddle it came with is doing a splendid job.I just don't know about apes. They seem to work well for some riders, but they don't suit me.

+1 for the rider backrest. Helps my posture as well as supports my lower back. I pop it on for longer rides. I used to be stiff and sore after about an hour and now I can prettymuch ride all day.

I've owned the Sporty the Heritage Softail the RKC and now the Ultra. The only bike that bothered me was the RKC due to back pain. I followed the same path with the sundowner seat which didn't help. I then tried the adjustable backrest and it totally cured my problem! Could have ridden for hours and hours...no prob...hope this helps!

+1 on the "adjustable" riders backrest! I don't like the looks of it muchbut it works. It was an easy install, simple to adjust, and is incredibly comfortable.

Ride well,

Jim

Removable backrest is the only way to go. Pop it on for longer rides, remove it around town for easier mounts and dismounts. I also find it's great to have highway pegs mounted so I can vary my leg position and use them to "press" against the backrest, working the leg and back muscles on longer trips.
