KlockWerks Flared Windshield - Pictures & Feedback
After all the half assed windshield reviews I've read online at various sites about this shield and others please excuse me for being "wordy".I wanted a 12" Windshield that performs as well or better than the stock 16"...Having run the Windvest 12" with recurve and the Klock Werks 12" Flare I'd say both even though 4" shorter will divert airflow vertically close to or as well as the the stock HD windshield, that on it's own made the stock shield obsolete.
Klock Werks 12" Flare:
Upper Airflow:
Similar to a more conventional 12" with recurve and holds it's own compared to stock.
Lower Lateral Airflow:
On Road Glides it hits ya right where the hand grips start and I expect that'll pretty much be the same with any of 'em.
Upper Lateral Airflow:
Get out on your own on an open road and it's pretty easy to do a poor man's wind tunnel test by moving your hand around to feel the airflow pattern. The KW shield's performance up by my ears was good.Moving my hand from my ear outwards it was easy to feel the airflow's diverted well laterally.
The "pocket" below my chin and in front of my chest seemed quietest and least turbulent of anything I've tried.
The "hips" those angled depressions in the KW windshield's design will channel a strong concentrated "V" shaped airflow pattern radiating from the shield upward and out, clear of the rider and passenger,it's something you can easily feel the pattern of with your hand, try it if you get a chance.
As for looks,it would be interesting to see how a dark smoke version of this shield would look on a Road Glide,at 12" it's easy to see over for most riders,a dark tint might look great.I may play around with some pics on photo shop and see if I can get an idea what it would look like.
For the Road Glides a well designed 12" aftermarket windshield can clearly perform as well or better than a stock 16" HD
....IMHO you can't go wrong changing to any of the quality ones.I'm running the Klock Werks because wind protection being somewhat equal among the 12 inchers the KW Flare design cuts through the wind more smoothly and a bit of downward force beats the alternative especially runnin' 80 mph on interstates past semi's and over bridges n' stuff...
I can't speak for the E-Gliders,But for Road Glides the design of the 12" flare shield follows right along with the the aerodynamic lines that make the Road Glide a great highway bike...

However...... I 'm 5' 9.5" with a 32 inch inseam. I spent 5 hours on the bike in 70 F Free Air Temps riding in all cardinal directions. I had a head on wind, rode with the wind, wind from the right, wind from the left and both right and left quartering winds (from a 45 degree angle). I experience bad buffeting in all conditions. If I scrunched down - still there. If I sat up tall - still there. The air flow across the bike was fine until right around 50-55 mph. My radio became largely useless above 50 ish mph
My buddy was riding my 01 Lowrider (no windshield at all) and we switched for a while. I was relieved to be on my Dyna as there was no buffeting (as would be expected). I received wind to every part of the front of my body..... but it was relatively clean, undisturbed air.
My 6' tall buddy experienced the same buffeting on the Road Glide and was happy to get back on my Dyna.
All that being said.... the service at KW was great. The young lady who recommended I try the 8 inch version was very clear when she expressed that I should give it a try and, if not to my liking, swap it out for the 12 inch.
I hold no grudge nor complaint with KW. Service is huge and they have, to date, been very good. I'm stuck at Ft Knox (without either scoot) until this w/e and I will package up the 8 inch and take KW up on the offer to do a swap. I'll post the results when I have them. I gotta have both looks and function.
