Default Installing Wild 1 517's- Need Help.....

Well, last night I went to put on my Wild 1, 517's(for Road Glides) on my 07 Road Glide. The wires to the switches on both the right and left hand side are too short! I assume that I am to run the wires internally inside the handlebars (there are holes to do so) as there are no dimples like the stock bars have so you can tuck the wires in to get on your clutch and brake clamps.

Anyway, the wires will not reach......Of course the wires I am talking about go from the switches, down along the handlebars and into the fairing/headlight area. Is there an xtension of some sort I need to get at HD that will give me another4 inches or so???

I re-routed my clutch cable on the outside of the forks so the stock one works. Looks like I will need a +4 front brake line too.

I know some of you have the 517's. How did you deal with the switch wiring not being long engough? Wild 1 did nottell meIwould have this issue.

Here is a PICTURE of the wiring I am talking about. The large black conduit wiring to the switches. In this picture is is run externally because it is too short to run internally. Because the wire is so thick and he bars are not dimpled I can't even run them externally.

You'd have to split the casing and pull the individual wires to run theminternally. Too thick otherwise, no big deal. You can pick up color coded wire extension kits cheap on eBay.

In my case I did 'em all by hand. I believe there is a "handlebar wiring extension kit" from HD. You will probably need to ask a knowledgable "parts" guy. I believe it's available for the 07's.

You probably need something like this...

Thanks for the info. I called my local dealer and they use the Novello clip in ones too! Said they work great.

Since the Wild 1 bars are larger dieameter than stock I assume running the wires through them is easy? Thereis a large hole up by the grip and then the center/underside of the bar has a large open area.

The Novello extensions are basically held together with heat shrink which I personally am not to keen on. I cut the female ends off of them, cut the male ends off the switch wire and them soldered the color-matched wires together. If you go this route (talk to others cause its a pain) make sure to get the longest extension kit possible because it's critical that you stagger the soldered connections. The Novello kit ain't cheap - so you could also consider having the dealer make you up an extension kit - this is difficult to do yourself unless you have a very very expensive Molex crimping tool for the pins - be aware there are cheaper crimping tools but they (are at least not the ones I've used) don't do a good job and it is critical that the pins are crimped correctly otherwise they won't slide into the Molex housing. HD does have a complete switch kit with 60" of pinned wire but unfortuanelty they're not made for bikes with cruise or radios which really sucks because this would make the job a whole lot easier. On my second attempt to do this job (I'm retentive) I did use this kit - gutted it and put most of the components into my stock housing with cruise and then soldered my cruise wires - this effectively cut the solder joints down to 5 from 17.

Pull the black coating off the wires. Cut your wires instaggered cuts near the base of the barsand splice wire in.The heat shrink each individual wire and then heat shrink them all together. Will cost less than $5.

bucso12,
I don't know if my 05 Road Glide is different from your 07, but I found plenty of slack for the wires in the headlight area, behind the instrument cluster to get the length of wire that you need. You do have to cut some wire ties to do so. Like you found out, the clutch cable will work if you move it. The brake line has to be straightened a little bit, and the throttle cables will work as well.

Guys- Thanks for all the help!

Stl Mike and Harley 0711 got me some great info. I did find more than enough extra wire slack inside the fairing. Just cut the 2 wire looms and gave myself some more slack. Still plenty left that it's not tugging at all when I turn the wheels etc.

Removing the 14 wires from the connector....Pain in the ace!!! Well until I figured it out. Even with the service manual I was not doing it right till about 45 minutes in. I was trying to use a little ice pick thing.....FYI- Use a paper clip end or safety pin end. It needs to be super small. My own fault, it was 11 pm and I should have quit for the day.

Harley 0711 gave me a great tip I am going to try when puting the fairing back on....Remove the headlight from the fairing, put the fairing back on (this allows you to see the 2 hooks you need to hit) then when the fairing is all the way on, plug the headlight in and snap it back into place!
