The 2008 Models have been out for about 6 months now. I went back & read the threads related to ABS & know there's guys both really in favor or really against ABS.
I'm wondering, as I'm about to pick up a new RG with ABS (Specifally decided on the '08 for this reason not to mention the return to the black motors instead of the gray on the '07's), for those of you that bought an '08 w/ABS & have tested 'em or have had a scary situation where the ABS worked as designed & really made a difference?
Any comments from actual experience with the '08's w/ABS? Thanks.
I haven't had a scarry situation yet, but have tested them, and had one situation where I was on sand (this spring streets still not clean from winter sandings) and the ABS kicked in when I didn't expect it to. The pulsing of both the front brake lever and foot pedal gets your attention real quick, but not a bit of slide or skid from the tires. I think its one of the best additions to the 08s and am sure you won't regret having it.
I'm liking it. Like most have said it is not a replacement for good riding skills....I practiced braking A LOT on the Deluxe for my safety and found it really paid off when I did do a major panic stop.
The one time I think the ABS kicked in, for me it still seems hard to tell with the vibration you get at rest on the touring bikes --I'm still not used to it,the bike was totally solid. I figures with adding the extra weight It was a prudent move for me.
I actually had more problems getting used to those front brakes...coming off of a softail to the touring bikes (single to dual rotors) I almost threw myself off of the dang thing several times![&:]

How long have HD Police Bikes been using ABS now?
I have read alot of Police comments on it and they seem to like it much.
I doubt we see more usage than they do. In alot dangerous situations as well.
Have only had one truely panic stop situation (woman driver in a toyota on a cell phone - how sterotypical can you get? Don't remember if she was blonde - my butt was too busy trying to bite holes in the saddle for me to pay much more attention) and the ABS worked as advertised. Don't know what it will be like down the road as far as any problems, but for now I'm glad I have it on the bike.
No real need for them yet, but have tested them and the feeling of stopping without wheel lockup is great.
You do feel the pulsating front and rear. Glad I did it.
