Stopped in to my dealer yesterday and bought a new air filter and 2 new spark plugs for my 2007 Street Glide. The parts girl asked me what bike the parts were for and came out from the back stock room with a filter in the box and 2 plugs. The box had a HD label on it with the part number and a description of the contents. It said, "TC88 Carbureted Air Filter". I said this is the wrong part. Guess what? It's the right part with the correct part number and it fits just fine!
Now how can a FI 96 cu inch engine breathe through the same air filter a an 88 cu inch carbureted engine? No wonder I keep reading about changing the air filter to something that lets the engine breathe.
Am I the only one not aware that HD was using up old stock on their new bikes?
You wouldn't need more flow unless the engine was modified to turn more RPM's. It's the same situation as a mid-60's Chevrolet with a 5500rpm-redline 327ci engine using the same AC as one with a 6500rpm-redline 427. The stock AC is restrictive even with a TC88, but will flow little more at a given RPM with a TC96 compared to a TC88/95. Your best bet is to throw the old AC away and buy an SE, Ness, or K&N high-flow AC--then retune for the change. Fuel Moto is working on their own design taking parts from some of the other makers along with some custom mods. It's still in the works, but when finished I'll get one to rid the problem of oil blowout I'm experiencing with my present K&N.
