Like I said above that was years ago when I was told that stuff and it was just coming out on the market and from the way it was put to us it was the pure non blended Syn that had those problems. When I started using it in 05 when I got my Springer and they were pushing the Syn 3 I asked them about what I had been told by the Mobil Rep about Syn oils and thats when they told me Syn 3 was a blend of syn and dyno oil thus getting most of the good points from both typs of oil. I'd pretty much be willing to bet thats what they do is use a Syn oil with enough Dyno blended in. That or they have found a fix for the problems they were experiencing with the first pure Syn oils.

One time a friend had a new 95" build and against the advice of the builder broke it in on Synthetic... the rings did not seat well. I just did a 117" and did the break-in on Dino. 300 miles and changed with Dino then 1000 miles before Synthetic. No issues.

Doesn't it depend on the rings? I wonder if the oil requirement was closer to the 0W-40 or 5W-30 if it was even an issue.

As far as how the oil is derived, there are lots of threads about that.

We have built many of the 120R engines to this point. I can say I have never had one use oil. No issues with that what so ever. Even the 120R with the super charger has not used a drop.

Is there any rumor or insight as to whether or not the MoCo is going to offer the 120R in granite color for the CVO line?

I doubt they ever will.. Even the 110 engines in the SE catalog are black and chrome.

Nice to see some big power baggers around. Makes me excited to finish mine up and see where we end up! Results to follow!

Didn't want to get everyone's **** hot about oil on this thread, but in a nutshell I got to look at 1600 cylinders broke in with synthetic, synthetic blends, multi-weight dino, and 40W dino. Focus was on which was best for break in. Primary concern was the plain bearings, followed by ring seating. Best for bearings was 40w dino (syn was fine, but not worth the cost). Best for seating piston rings was multi-weight dino. The tribologists from Chevron said was because the milti's got thin enough and the coefficient of friction was not so low to prevent areas with too high of a surface finish on the rings and cylinder walls from seating during break-in(syn & syn-blends had a tendency to do this). Back to the original issue of rings not seating on the 120R, properly finished Rings and Cylinders should seat on any of the oils. But, something is not right with the surface finish on either his rings or cylinder walls on the 120R. Mission is to get them to seat and function properly before other problems occur. Best way to do this is run 20-40w dino and see if he can get them to seat. Also is the lowest cost solution, and you'd have nothing to lose by trying it. If you cant get them to seat (check cyl. compression, etc), take the motor back and tell them to fix it.

Default 09 FLHTC Dyno Results

Finally found my dyno printout. Very happy with the performance, not as happy with the mpg, but I guess more power means more fuel.

09 FLHTC
103" Stage 3 Kit
SE 257 Cams
Heads Ported & Polished
V&H Pro Pipe
SE Stage 1 Air Cleaner
SE Super Tuner
Max HP=103.3
Max Torque=102.5

I am not sure about your Dyno results.
Within the normal riding range RPM (2-3.5K), the HP and torque are low, and your package should be better than mine.
Just a thought!
