Problem is they keep ordering units from the refurb facility. There is no connection to the customer or feedback as far as what's been found and what may be causing the issue. Not getting the same radio back after the repair results in the loss of alot of the quality control.
Multiple issues on the same bike is probably not a radio issue, but a bike issue causing the radio failure (see broken fairing brackets, riser bolt impact, etc).
I have one for you guys... The display light on my 08 street glide was working fine when I bought it last year. I noticed when riding the other night the light started flickering. As I throttle up the light gets brighter...still doing it too! Other than that the radio works fine.
I have an 09 Ultra with 31000 miles on it and have started having the same problem, the sound goes out, and I have to toogle the speaker switch to get it to come back on. It is starting to happen more frequently and it doesn't always come back on with the flipping of the switch. Looks like I will have to pull it out and send it ironcrossaudio. Thanks

Symptoms acting alot like liquid damage to the faceplate PCB.
Mine started acting up this week. Looks like I'm sending my Harmon Kardon to Iron Cross Audio. Exact same problem 80% of you said, volume bar on radio works but speakers cut out. Turn radio off and on, maybe the sound comes back, maybe not. Maybe sound for 20 minutes, maybe 2 minutes.

Is the radio hard to pull?
Radio is pretty simple to pull out. I had this problem with my 08 Ultra and sent my HK unit to Iron Cross about 2 months ago and the problem is gone. Very fast turnaround on the service time. I dealt with the sound cutting out on mine for over and year and it just got progressively worse to the point the unit would not turn on for days. Send it in you will be glad you did.
I got the long 3/16 ball allen wrench for the 4 screws but and I Googled and YouTubed and checked the manual how the pull the radio. On the 2006 EGC, most say pull the radio out toward the front, a couple other say pull the radio out the fairing toward the rear of the bike.

All of the HK radios have a bracket attached to the top of the chassis for securing the CB, XM, and iPod modules. That bracket will prevent removing the radio to the rear of the bike. I've found that you gain a bit of wiggle room by loosening the screws at the top of the black vertical fairing brackets.
Dont count out radio. I had similar problem. I chased it via wires, amp, speakers, checking everythang over and over. Finally pulld radio noticed where the riser allen bolts heads had been viberating against the bottom of radio chassis. Sent it to IronCross Audio. Had viberation damage. Plus I also changed the riser bolts to a lower profile head torx bolt.

Thanks for the tip, loosening the bracket helped. Too bad I didn't notice there was a wire harness, totally unrelated to the radio, secured to the bottom. Could have saved a couple minutes wondering why the hell it was stuck.
