Default Zumo 550 Install

I just ordered a Zumo 550 and was wondering how I will connect the wiring directly to my 07 FLHTC. I will want to use it between my car and the bike.

There are a lot of ways to install it, and if search the archives, you'll find some good info. Bottom line is, the Zumo has everything you need. What I did was use the stock RAM mount that comes with it, then added a cig lighter adaptor to the end of the power cable. The unit comes off the bike in seconds, leaving only the RAM ball, which can easily be removed with two screws. If you want to hear MP3s from the Zumo through the radio, you'll need to run a cable to the AUX port on the radio.

Do a search here and you'll find lot's of options. I did. I recommend the marine grade cigarette lighter adapter. Works perfect on mine and I can move it to the car easily. Another word of advice: download and install the latest software from Garmin before extensive use. Mine crashed on a long bike trip and would not reset until I removed the SD card and loaded the new software.

How I wired mine on a 07 FLHTC.
Went to CarQuest and bought four waterproof connectors, looks like the battery tender connector, wired one to the two wires running to the headlight bulb connector ( two wires with a red cap over them, not used in USA, made for daylight running lights) then ran the wires through the opening in fairing to left handle bar where I mounted a RAM ball mount.
Make sure to wire the HOT to the rubber covered side. Cut the power wire for the Zumo and install the other waterproof connector, you know have a waterproof quick disconnect for the Zumo. All you have to do is use the other connectors you bought for any other vehicle, quick and easy.

As for use between the car and bike, you should have two separate Zumo cradles, one for the motorcycle and one for the vehicle, vehicle plugs into cig lighter or 12v receptacle.

Another option is to go with the Kennedy Technology Group Harley MC/GPS interface unit (KTG #95436) and Zumo 550 harness (KTG# 95423). Like most things this has it's pros and cons but one of the nice things about the wiring harness is that it combines the power, audio out and audio in cables into one nice neat package. You can find out more about them both at either the KTG website cellset.com or cyclegadgets.com.

I bought a threaded RAM ball & drilled through the inner fairing. The visibility is great. Used a West Marine cigarette lighter for power. Good website for Zumos www.zumoforums.com The detail of my installation is there as well as others.

+1 on Buffalobob's recommendation...don't want to leave anything out for the thieves to take...keep it simple.

I did exactly what Casper did only without the waterproof connector.
I think Casper did that so he can remove the mortorcycle cradle easily.
Since I only have one bike and the Zumo 550 comes with a seperate car cradle,
I have no real need to remove the cradle.
I personally didn't like the 12v plug in solution.
It was easy to start using the Zumo quickly, but I wanted a cleaner more permanent install.
While you have the fairing off, don't forget to run a audio jack (the only thing I ordered seperate) from the Zumo to the bikes audio in jack on the bike through the fairing for the audio through the bike speakers.
The Zumo itself has no speaker.
I used a 6' 90 degree 3.5mm jack I bought off of ebay for about $5. It really does take most of six feet of audio cable.
The power point that Casper told you about is right next to where the connector plugs into the headlight. One wire is orange with a plastic cap and the other is black(ground).
That said......
The Zumo is by far the best and most used thing I bought for the Ultra.
You can explore any road without getting lost.
Careful, it makes you fearless as far as exploring goes.
I forgot to mention....
That security screw and special screw driver will drive you crazy.
I did order a second item. It was a thumb screw to repace the stock screw.
You can take the unit off in the dark in 5 seconds.
Yes, it is also easier for someone else to take off as well, but I don't leave the Zumo unit itself on the bike unless I'm pretty close by.
If you want to know where I got it, PM me.
Okay fine, I lied, I also bout a 2GB SD memory card to put my music on.
I promise that's all I bought.
Okay, okay, I am also considering the XM attachment for realtime traffic and weather.
But that's it I swear.
