Default New tubes really necesary?

Going install some new tires on my motorcycle. Plan on doing it myself. I have spoke wheels and every motorcycle shop I talked to always wanted to replace my tubes If I had let them do it. Was wandering, was it really necessary to replace the tubes every time you put new tires on. Some even said they had to replace the rim strip. By the time the HD shop got through I will be saving @ $300 by doing it myself.

How safe do you want to be?
Replacing the rim strip is always necessary if there is ANY rust in the rim. I have usually replaced tubes every other tire. I also try to use European tubes because the compound is better. Jap tubes "star" crack when punctured. Euro tubes only puncture without collateral damage.

If you save 300$ by doing it yourself then drop 50$ for rim strips and tubes. you already have it apart. would you change the oil and leave the old filter because its cheaper?

This isn't something to ponder. The strips and tube replacement is an absolute must. In order to have our pretty laced wheels we run the risk of blowouts compared to tubeless tires. Don't add to the possibility of bigger problems.

I'm on my 3rd rear tire and second tube at 20k miles. I'll replace it during the next tire change.

Changing them every time is cheap compared to paying for a tow home... or worse, having a blow out at speed and crashing. You can do the labor yourself and spend THAT money on doing the job right. Be sure to inspect your bearings while you have the wheels off and if you have the old style roller bearings nows the time to lube them and change the grease seals!

Preventive maintenance cost money, but so does ALL insurance.
