Default Bike shut down while passing semi

I have a 99 egs with around 10,000 miles on it. This weekend I Was in the mountains at about 10,000 ft. elev. when I passed a semi, in the process I did bring it briefly to redline. Just after getting around the big boy my bike shut down...just like someone reached down and turned off the ignition.
So I pull over on the shoulder sayin WTF!. At first I thought I may have accidently hit the kill switch but it was on run and I had 3/4 tank of fuel. Try to start it up and not even a sputter.
So there I sit in remote mountain wilderness wonderin if I blew my motor and the lovely wifey is sayin "NOW WUDYA DO".
After about a minute I hit the starter again and she fired right up and away we went....never had another problem driving several hundred miles home.

Any ideas on what happened? Could it have been the elevation? Something to do with redlining it? Anyone ever had this happen?

Luckily all turned out well but this could be quite dangerous in certain circumstances. Any opinions would be greatly apreciated.

Could have been a loose wire on the battery terminals. And check the ground wire where ever it attaches to the bike also. I'd check there first, then maybe something like a loose master fuse or something. Even the terminals of the ignition switch. Just sayen it sounds electrical in nature to me.

The bike is protesting 10,000 miles in 8 or 9 years maybe?

It sounds to me a lot like a circuit breaker tripping off, and then resetting. I am not 100% sure, but I think the fuel pump is operated with a breaker in line. It sure does sound like some sort of electrical problem. The first place I tell anyone who is having any type of elect problem to look is the battery. Make sure your running on all 6 cells and not 5. Load test the battery. Check the leads.....make sure the terminals are tightly crimped and soldered to the leads, and then check where the leads are connected (both ends....the battery end, and the frame for ground or whatever). Make sure all connection points are clean and tight. Before you start checking the battery though.....start the bike, and jiggle **** around a bit to see if you can duplicate the condition. If everything with the battery checks out.....you have to go from there. If it was me, my next place to look would be at the fuse panel....to check for a breaker.

Good luck, and PLEASE post back here to let us know what the problem was....how you found it.....and what you did to fix it.

It needs to be taken immediately to the closest HD "redicuously low mileage" drop off point and given to someone that will put some miles on it.

My neighbor has a 1999 BMW 1100LT that he is selling with 3500 miles on it.

Everybody is different, but I just don't understand.

Maybe he just bought it.

If you were leaning REALLY far over, the bike-down engine shutoff might have ... uh, never mind.

If I recall correctly 99 and 00 had a stint of bad lean angle sensors. These have been known to go bad and cause similar issues. The other thing i would check is all of your electrical connections and if the problem persists let a more knowledgable mechanic check it out.
