Hogtunes Help needed
One thing that occurs to me is that the power from the HK head unit is being wasted at this time on my bike. If two speakers are added to the lowers, the amp will power them and the head unit will power the fairing speakers, or vice versa. The point being is that I should have about 20w/ch. feeding one set of speakers and the 32w/ch. (@ 2Ω) or so feeding the other, which should enhance the sound quality. It seems that the lowers would act as a speaker enclosure and enhance bass considerably. Is this the case?
The amp is not on the website as a single item, but if you call Pez he'll sell it to you for $217 (including shipping), or at least that's what it cost me last spring. The amp boosts bass 10db plus another 3db (switchable from -3, 0, and +3) if desired over the entire frequency spectrum. This is good because the HT amp only takes the signal from the stock head unit and makes its changes. Thus, if you are distorting from the head unit you'll be distorting with the HT amp too. The good news is that the signal boost allows you to turn the volume down on the head unit to achieve the same effective volume at the speakers, so distortion occurs at a higher db level than before. I would say the amp is easily worth the $217 price tag. In fact, one day while the outer fairing was off I re-routed the wiring to bypass the amp, and I found the sound to be weak and unacceptable. The amp and speakers will spoil you, although the combo won't make your HK stereo sound like a high-end system in your den. For about $300 (speakers and amp) I would say it is a worthwhile upgrade.
I'm considering adding the lower-fairing speakers, but to date have not seen much if any feedback on this option compared to only the fairing speakers with the amp. This option is about $200 and I would expect a meaningful quality upgrade over what I already have for this investment.
Hope that is the feedback you were looking for.
