Default saddle bag rail inserts

This is nothing more than to show how to correct a problem. It seams as I get older I forget to check either part numbers or to check if I am getting the part that will fit my bike. This is how I corrected a simple oversight.

The photo is so everyone will know what I am talking about.
Went to the dealer to get a set and they could not find them. Finally one of the sales people found one on the rack. My mistake, I did not check the years it would fit. It turned out it went to a 2009 Ultra Classic and I have an 2007 model. Second mistake I still did not check it before starting the install. We know how the dealerships can be about returns when the package has been opened.

Now on how to get it to work.
First the only 2 differences is the inner support bracket that fastens to the fender rail as where the guards connect. The bracket is about 3-3 1/2 inches too long and the support bracket that connects to the upper/lower saddle bag guards. The small chrome support. The front (the part you see) has 2 threaded holes that also has kinda like dowels that is threaded. The rear and side chrome inserts has to be over these dowels and both are connected at the same point. The new back (the one you can not see) goes in the inside between the saddle bag and guard. The holes are the same size as the allen screws. The threaded dowels go through the 2 chrome inserts but are to long so they (the chrome inserts)can not be tight because of the threaded dowels. Drill to fit the holes as the chrome inserts are now it will tighten.

The inner support bracket will work. after putting things in place. I installed the screws loosely. I then marked where the new holes needed to be and cut off the excess. After finishing I removed the bracket again to match the other side. Fits just like it should.

Hope this helps someone.

Jim

Good write-up. Sometimes a little southern engineering is all it takes to get you out of a problem. Good job.

Very nice job and excellent write-up/pics. I liked those and had them on my bike until changed to the SG style, guardless bags.

Owning a police bike, I've had a lot of experience making things fit/work.

Always a good idea to double-check part nos. yourself and not rely on the dealer parts guy.
