I have some very sad news today. Took my 2K RK in at 40K to have the tensioners replaced. I figured at 40K, check and while they were at it, go ahead and fix. The tensioners were in better shape than the CAMS. I have to have new ones. Thing is Harley knew the 99 and 2000 cams and bearings were crap and say we need to buy the extended warranty to fix THEIR screw ups. My rep is making the call to HD because they agree. (probably won't do any good) Harley fixed the cam issues in 01 but figure me having the extended warranty will help me and my wife when we are broke down in the Ozarks on THEIR TOURING bike good for maybe 40K miles (if you're lucky) I'm pretty POed right now and it's gonna cost me about 7 or 8 hundred bucks (just to fix THEIR problem)...
You going with a bigger cam or a stock cam? There are hundreds of used but like new stock cams out there from all the bigbore kits. I could probably get you a stock set real cheap...

Yamaha Venture touring bike, for example, has five year warranty. Has HD ever heard of a recall? Honda rewelds all the frames on the Wing on the recall. CHIZ53 and many others are big time losers due to HD workmanship and materials, not because they did not have a warranty.
The bike is six years old & he got 40,000 miles out of that set of cams, how does that make him a bigtime loser due to Harley workmanship? Harley has had it's share of recalls. One that comes to mind was the electrical breaker on the baggers a few years back.
Harley recently paid to split the cases on my 04 SEEG because of a very minor oil leak. I was able to make upgrades on Harleys nickel while the motor was apart. They also replaced both rims because the chrome was bad. No cost to me.
Honda rewelded their frames because they were faulty and Honda would have incurred serious liability had the repairs not been made, not because they are generous. These bikes were only a year old when Honda did this recall. Would you want your brand new bike completely disassembled because of faulty engineering? If the workmanship had been better to start with there would have been no need for a recall.

Let's see. 10,000+ people on the Forum and we have ONE that has reported a problem with cams and SIX who have reported a problem with chain tensioners. I don't see that being a huge problem when you consider the THOUSANDS of HD's in service and MILLIONS of miles that they have racked up. Most folks that have a problem with their rides have had a satisfactory outcome with the MOCO. Something happens in warranty and they fix it. Something happens out of warranty and you fix it. Pretty simple really. my .02 cents[&:]
liltrk,
Please tell me Harley fixed them for you at no cost.
Nope, they were all out of warranty by being more than one year old. In any case they would only have put in new tensioners. All three of us decided that gear drives were the way to go, and ended up doing other mods in the "might as well" category.
I'm not a "big time loser" as you say. The odds are in HD's favor. BUT THEY KNEW THIS WAS AN ISSUE. I take tour trips on my Bike and would like to be somewhat sure that it's not gonna let me down at 40K with a problem they knew about. I have a soft spot for HD but my pocketbook and piece of mind are getting harder all the time.

I posted this in another thread but I thought I would put it here since it is the same subject. My RK has 51K + miles and this is what they found.
The cam chain tensioner shoes were BAAAAAD! The rear was just starting to show some metal but the front one,( the one on the cam timing chain) was worn to the point that the inside of the plastic (?) block broke off and the chain was riding in the metal shoulder. I'll post some pics when I get home to my camera.
All it takes to check these things is to remove the cam chest cover and look. Replacing them depends on your wrenching skills and equipment. I plan on looking at these in about 30K miles. Until then-no worries.
