I have a 08 FLHRC and hate the stock handlebars. I want to change to 12.5" chubby ape hangers. I've talked to 3 different dealers and got prices from $725 to $1800. The problem seems to be the fly by wire throttle, everyone seems to have a different view of the amount of work required. Has anyone changed out their bars? Has anyone used the 09 Heritage bars on their RK? I'm looking for help!
I have an '08 FLHRC and hated the stocks bars as well. I changed to the Wild 1's RK pull backs and had all the wires run internally. My indy charged me $350 for the install. The new bars are much more comfortable. Oh, and the throttle sensor is no problem. All of the Wild 1's bars have the notch cut out in the end. The sensor fits right in perfectly.
The Police bars are the same as the Heritage bars and they are a direct swap, my husband put mine on and it was not that difficult to do. No extensions on TBW or Brake Line needed.

I recently installed a set of Khrome Werks 300515 +2 Wide Sweeper bars on my 2008 Street Glide and ran the wire internally. Here a write-up on the process, along with these pics.
From what I understand the heritage bars work with all existing wires and cables. If you are going to run the wire internally, then I would suggest purchasing the HD twist grip sensor replacement PN 32310-08 $80.46 to made running the wires easer.
If you have some mechanical ability and the service manual you can most likely do it yourself.

The real problem with cost may be in what the new bars you have picked require as far as replacement of cables. The police bars everyone has spoken of, if the same as the heritage bars will not require any new cables, just the bars and the labor would be all that is involved. Just as an example, I just got a price to have a set of "HD tall boy" bars put on my 09 Ultra. The price of the bars themselves was only $149.00 but when the required parts list was put together(new cables and whatever other parts) the bars, cables, parts price was suddenly $743.00 before tax. And with labor this was going to push it to around $1000 for this bar swap. Check on the Heritage style police bars, it should greatly reduce your cost and you should really like them, I put a set on my 06 roadking and really liked the improved feel of the bike.
