Do you have to remove the ring around the head light before removing it?

Remove the windshield first but after it's removed, re-insert the middle screw a few turns to hold the fairing in place while you remove the inner fairing screws.

Now holding the fairing from below the headlight, remove that one screw and pull the fairing towards you until you can see the connector for the headlight. Reach in, unplug it and the fairing is free. Make sure you have a safe area to place the fairing after it's removed.
+1, though I pretty much fully reinstall the center screw rather than "a few turns."

When it's time to reinstall the fairing, the center windshield screw goes in first, but not fully seated; then, the two outer windshield screws are installed, again, loosely. You can then install the windshield and add a few twists to each of the three winshield screws before going on to the screws located on the rider side of the inner fairing.

Owners with SG's or EG's with passing lamps removed should always reinsert the center windshield screw because, otherwise, there are no passing lamps to keep the outer fairing from hitting the fender when all the screws are removed.

By the way, did anyone's Santa bring them a Service Manual for Christmas 'cause it's the gift that keeps on giving?

I need to pull the outer off to do my oil temp guage and a couple other things. Thanks for the advice. Santa brought my manual early, so I am good to go. I just need to get the garage warm enough to work.
