I live in the south, and because the lower fairings are not supposed to be on the bike in temps above 50, they would be off more than on. I bought soft lowers for approx. $50. They weigh almost nothing, and take up very little room in the saddle bag.
There is no air-temperature requirement for fairing lowers, unlike the soft lowers that HD warns should not be used in temps of 50° or higher. The hard lowers actually help cooling when moving since the wedge shape channels more air toward the engine, and although they can trap air and hamper ventilation when not moving I didn't notice any change in oil temps last summer with lowers compared to the previous summer without them.
I installed mine with the quick-release kit but have yet to remove them in almost a year. The vents provide ample ventilation for legs in summer and I've never felt the need to remove the lowers even during July and August in S. LA. This remains one of my favorite add-ons that I've made to the bike.
