Default OIL temp gauge ???

My oil temp gauge I got for Christmas finally came and I hooked up the gauge in my faring, installed sender in the pan and ran all the wires. The directions that came with the HD gauge says to test by turning on the ing. and the gauge should go to the ambient temp or stay pegged at the lowest graduation, and the light should come on. Ok the light comes on and the gauge moves up just below the 110 degree mark on the gauge. The ambient temp in my garage is about 72 degrees. Any ideas. No pinched wires everything hooked up right the light comes on.

You are OK if you have the light and the needle movement from rest to 110*. Ride it and get the true test. Depending on your outside air temp a ride of about 30 miles minimum will bring you up to operating temperature. Keep in mind that your readings are all relative and that the gauge just gives you a visual idea of your oil temps. Note your outside air temps and oil temps after warm up. You could have lower oil temps with low outside air temps and higher oil temps with higher air temps. It's all relative.

My first thought was, is the engine warm at all from before you did the install and maybe that actually is the temp at the sender? Otherwise, I'd let it cool down for several hours and try it again. Let us know what happens as this is on my list of winter projects for my Street Glide.

That is typical of the gauge. When power is off the needle sits on the peg. When you power up the needle jumps up to 110*. My garage is about 40* right now and the needle just jumped up to just under 110*. It is the norm.

Assuming it was installed correctly and all wiring/connections are sound: what does it read with the engine running and warming? If it reads progressively to within operating temperatures, probably OK. Or try an oven thermometer (unless you have a laser-type thermal reader handy) in the oil fill spout (engine off!) and compare readings. Or it may be possible to adjust the guage down if it has a small adjustment screw on back for this purpose. Sorry if no help...

Thanks SOOS and everybody else, that makes me feel better. I took my time and I know I did it right and made sure all wire were free from a pinch . I have lots of experience in wiring and was afraid that maybe the sender or the gauge was bad. I forgot to add that the bike has been sitting in the garage all winter and it has not been run any in months , so KJ let us know when you get yours installed what it does.

I just did the same install and SOOS hit it on the head. I left my bike idle in the garage for a little while and the thing didn't move. The next day it warmed enough to get out and put some miles on and it got up to the 150 range (keep in mind it was maybe 50 that day). It sounds like you did it correctly get it out of the garage and see what she does.
