You can inspect them easily, but you'll have to pull the cam plate to inspect the inner tensioner. Look for excessive wear depth and/or cracks. I had to replace mine at around 30k and my inner was just about shot when I checked it. Some get 15k, some get around 50k, but they are a wear part and will need to be replaced at some point.

By the way, I've had no issues with the MM EFI on my bike.

What is the usual time/labor charge to check the cam tensioners ?

I'm closing in on 30k so I guess I should be thinking about having them looked at.

Have a 2000 EFI RKC with 72,000klms (about 45,000 miles) with SE Stage 2 Kit. Recently had the cams inspected and found two issues: lobes on cams were starting to wear and cam chain tensioners were very, very worn (and all that material must've floated around in the motor over time). So, removed SE Cams and replaced with S&S 510's. Maximum HP increased by 8HP and I picked up a new slight "whirring" sound in the motor that is somewhat reassuring. It is the final fix (I hope) for a known problem. Sorry, can't comment on cost from Australia. As for EFI, no problems at all. The motor runs as strong as ever, and today I rode a few different stock '09 models and made me want to keep my bike even more.

I love my 01 RK. I've put over 32k on her without a single issue. But, everyone is right about the cam bearings and tensioners, but that can be said for all chain driven camshafts when they get older. I have S&S510 gear drive with a 95" cylns. Good mid and torque. The Marelli fuel injection, has worked fine. The only real disadvantage to the MFI is that there is not much you can do with it to increase power, not like the Delphi. Other than that, Which really isn't a problem, you would enjoy the scoot. I do.

Ummm - you wouldn't be talking about my bike there would ya Turbo

I haven't been active in awhile - but I used to be really active around here. You can get a more detailed history on my bike if you read through the history of some of my threads if you want - uncensored & everything.

For what its worth - I can tell ya I haven't had any problems with my MM EFI setup - nor have I ever had any problems with the infamous "wobble" that so many have complained about with HD touring bikes.

I had, in my long range plans - planned on going to the Andrews gear-driven cam set "someday" - but the engine is still so young & healthy (I did have those tensioners inspected last year) - so I haven't even put it on my short range radar screen.

As for the fairness of the pricing - while I'm not 100% ready to drop the trigger on the offer we've got on the table just yet (again, assuming its my bike you're referring to), I can assure you - whoever ends up getting it is going to get a very very good deal. The only person the price might be unfair to is me

I had an Black 01 RKC and to date is still the nicest HD I have owned. The MM EFI is fine (IMHO) the only issue I remember was common was a shift shaft seal that would cause a small leak of primary fluid.

Grab it--youll love it PEZ
