I always keep my Ipod in a hardcase since I keep moving it from car to bike as needed. I use a magnetic tank bag but I'm using a radio with an Ipod control funtion with remote so I don't need access to the Ipod controls. Might not work for you if you need access to the Ipod while riding.
Guess I'm low tech, have my 3rd gen 8 gig nano velcro'd to the dash. Never a problem looks clean and I can stick it to the side wall of the tourpack when not in use.
