No, I don't think you do. The iPod classic has a spinning hard drive and won't likely take the vibration. The smaller iPods like the Nano have a flash memory drive, which is less likely to fail on a bike.
...Unless they've changed something. You can ck your documentation or Apple's site to be sure, but last I checked they had a real hard drive.

Guys, why are you messing around wasting handlebar space. Kuryakyn has a chromed mount that fits right into either the brake or clutch housing on the handlebars. The original equip bolts are discarded, and longer ones are used. Very tight to the starter or horn side buttons so still have room for GPS, or any other handlebar attachment. Did I also say it looks good too?
