Even a well tuned air cooled motor will overheat in traffic. While it may be HD's band aid for factory lean condition, it will still help a well tuned bike in the same conditions.

You are correct. I like it's operation, and it gives me peace of mind that My engine is protected.

Default Engine Idle Temperature Management System

I understand the concept, function, and operation (turning it on and off) of the Engine Idle Temperature Management System. My issue is that I suspect the feature is turning on & off by itself. The idle suddenly gets rough and the exhaust from the rear cylinder gets that bitter smell. A cat that I see at the gym says that he has heard that in fact the feature has been doing just that and that there is a download Harley can do to correct it. I have a 2009 Road King Classic. Anybody out there have any ideas about this? Thx.

In a nutshell, Harley, and other manufacturers, make their engines run lean to help meet EPA pollution limits but a lean engine will run hot. Not a big deal in a watercooled engine but it is more noticible in a stationary air cooled motor. If you add fuel to the fuel/air mixture the engine will run cooler. Aftermarket engine management systems such as PC III, PC V, ThunderMax, TTS, etc, add more fuel at idle, which richens the fuel/air mixture (ratio). This helps the engine run cooler but you are likely causing more pollution. Most, if not all, of the aftermarket fuel management systems are illegal in the People's Democratic Republic of Kalifornia for this reason.
