Has anyone here have any tips on making their own detatch fairing. i know McKay sells brackets to use the ole shovel head fairing. Also saw this idea on ebay where they use a current bagger fairing with the stock windshield. I dont really need a stereo and if i do was just going to get the 2tunes for an mp3. figured using just an outer shell it would allow me to keep my apes positioned more were i like them so the inner fairing dont get in the way. anyone got any ideas? not sure if i like the looks of memphis shades yet. really havent seen it on a bike yet. just thier crappy pictures on ads. Any ideas would be Great! thanks
I've made two. One for my RK and one for my brothers. Bought a used fairing, used stock brackets, cut a slot so it's 'quick release' and reinforced the brackets. They WILL crack if you don't reinforce them as the metal will bend right where you made the slot.
I used mine on my RK for over 10 yrs, and my brother still has his on his 97. They work GREAT, easy to do and inexpensive. I powdercoated my brackets, and you need to be careful on how thick the powder is, as it was a TIGHT fit on the grommets on the bike to get the fairing brackets on after that.
what brackets did you use and what exact fairing did you use and old flh one or a new one where you need to cut the bottom out the headlight. did it mount right up?
I used the old style Shovel brackets. They bolt right to the both the fairing and the fork/nacelle area without any mods. The newer style ones for the detach windscreen fit the bike, but not the fairing, so you have to fab some type of mount system.
I don't have any pics, sorry, sold the bike last year, but it really is easy to make with the old style brackets. Just use a dremel tool to make the openings for the quick release brackets and that's it.

Stock brackets and an old style fairing, bolts right up. I bought mine form a 79 FLH for my 94 RK, perfect fit. You can bolt it one without making it quick release, all you have to do is drop your light bar to install it.
