Default Chrome forks replacement questions

Looking to put chrome lowers and cans on my 09 Ultra. Read through the Service manual several times and did a search here to pick up some tips. Got some questions though.

As to the fork oil, does it simply just empty by taking out the small screw at the bottom of each fork and do you really need that fancy dancy tool to measure the level of the fluid when filling it up or can you just measure out the amount needed and pour it in through the top bolt.

Is it correct that you don't really need to take the forks out of the triple trees to do this change over.

Can the recessed bolt at the very bottom of the sliders be removed without a impact wrench?

Anyone buy these chrome lowers from anywhere other the HD dealers?

Any tips from you guys are really welcome.

It will drain, slowly, through the drain screw (after you open up the top to allow some air in). No need for any special tools, just measure what you're putting back in.

I've done it 3 times and removed them from the trees each time, but it CAN be done in place. You're already that far, not much more work to pull them all the way out and they'll be easier to work with.

Yes, I've never used an impact, just a sharp allen and a sharp blow with a hammer will break them free. Plan on using new screws and crush washers when you re-assemble.

Lots of folks save some coin by having the stock lowers locally chromed. I bought a set on eBay once, they were fine.

The left fork with the cartridge will not drain completely without taking the cartridge and pumping the fluid out of it. Takes a while. Once that's done I just pour in the recommended amount.

I agree that taking the forks out is easier. Also gives you a chance to clean behind the fairing and other spots you normally wouldn't be able to get to.

An impact wrench makes this much easier, although I've had to drill out the left side on both sets I've done because I could not get it to loosen.

Just take your time and follow the steps. Good luck.

i found that the most difficult part was removing the screw from bottom of fork..
I had to drill the head off the allen bolt because it would not move on one side and then once slider was removed it was easy to take allen of with some channel lock pliers..
I have read that if allen bolts are difficult or better yet to just make it easier : to remove entire legs and place multi-folded towel on garage floor then spray PB blaster on each allen bolt then place leg upside down on towel and have someone very firmly pull down on SLIDER to remove pressure on that dam allen bolt before attemp to remove.....your allen must be the kind in a socket..6mm ?..just cut the "L" off of one and place into a 6mm socket.

you can order the sliders thru a harley internet store..just need part numbers and save 20% and no tax.
do not forget:
fork seals
allen bolts/washer for bottom
may wish to change phillips style drain screws on sides if your model has them to allen style.

take several digital pictures of front end before starting from multiple angles with cell phone or real camera...it will help to remember placement when manual is unclear.

I don't have an 09 service manual, just an 03, and my bike had the cartridge. If there are just the springs/damper then it's easier. Was just assuming the 09's still had the cartridge, and you know what happens when you assume........

Just finished mine yesterday, along with a bunch of other work.

Now, that's what I call tearing the bike apart. Haven't seen that many pieces since my trips to the York factory. Thanks for all the replies and sure they'll help when I get to my project.
