Default Stage 1/SERT dissapointment

Last November when I stopped riding for my winter upgrades I was getting 45 MPG to 50 MPG under most riding conditions. Typically under 70 MPH and would sometimes cruise at 55 MPH resulting in excellent gas mileage. My totally stock 05 Ultra seemed to have adequate power for my needs.

During my upgrade I replaced the exhaust with T-Rex 3" true duals and K&N AC. I applied a preliminary SERT Rev E/G 127LF004. During my 10K service I switched to Synthetic, replaced the tires and had my dealer tweak the SERT on their dnyo. Here are the results:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g2...gh/DynoJet.jpg

Max power went from 63.87 to 69.71 and Torque from 71.04 to 75.94.

I do not understand this stuff. Hence this post. It seems to me that after I upgraded there was much better response at all speeds but the MPG dropped significantly. I expected the dealer's tweaking to improve that. However, after 6 Hours @ 72 per hour it seemed to ride just like I took it in. There also now seems to be a rattle that I have yet to find. I hear it at 40MPH+ and if I clutch in it goes away so it's engine related.

I've run two tanks through it and refuel between 150 and 160 miles. Takes 4.5 gal. I have been riding significantly faster; 70 to 100, probably averaging 70. But it appears that I'm getting less than 35 MPG.

I'm seriously considering putting the stock A/C and Exhaust back on to get my MPG back. After reading HD Renegade's post where his 06 stock was getting 80.55 Max HP and 81.24 Max Torque, I'm wondering if my Dyno guy made the right adjustments in 6 hours.

I'm taking a ride in two weeks from Park City, UT to Reno, Grants Pass, then down the California coast to San Diego, then El Centro, Parker, Kingman, Flagstaff, Mexican Hat and home.

Any thoughts? If my guy did not do a good job is there somewhere along my route that I could get it done right?

Sure seems like I wasted $3,000. The T-rex look and sound great but with the price of gas if I can't get better than 33MPG I'm thinking of reverting to stock.

I appreciate and respect any and all comments,

Thanks,

Bob

I too have an 05 Ultra. City and highway driving.

Stock scooter MPG was 42 to 44.

Put on a Stage 1, PCIII and Rush 2.5" baffles - and using the exact equipment map on Dynojet website for this setup.

Milage dropped to 32 to 33 MPG. Bike is stronger and doesn't "starve itself" or choke for gas like the stock setup did.

Changed the plugs to Screamin' Eagle triple platinum V type and milage is now up to 35 to 36 mpg.

Going in for a dyno on cinco de mayo. Hope it is worth it. Asked for an appointment with the BEST dyno guy at the stealership - don't want a trainee.

Better not be 6 hours like yours - that sounds unusual - I plan to be there and watch every step as so not to get ripped off.

I'll advise how it all turns out that weekend.

PCIII is much easier than a SERT. They can adjust the PC while on the Dyno. Thay have to flash the ECM and Run, flash the ECM and Run for the SERT. I thought SERT was the beast way to go. Especially since there is a HD Race Team at my dealership. Not sure I made a good decision. Don't know if the can flash the ECM back to OEM if I did pull the Exhaust and AC.

I'm just disappointed!!! But may be more so as I can't remember what my power was like, I think it was OK. But HD Reneagade is basically the same setup as mine and his is 10HP better. He's 06 and I'm 05 but really! I'm concerned that my experts are missing 10HP, you think?

Both you and HDRenegade are having gas mileage issues, SERT and PCIII. Your dyno results look low and his seem high. Mine are somewhere in the middle and am getting 200 miles or more on a tank, 40 mpg or better. Sounds like both tuners may lack experience, 6 hours? Setting a bike rich is the easy route for rookie dealer tuners and mileage will suffer. I was in the dyno chamber watching my bike get tuned on the fly. Amazed by the number of adjustments made!

Mine was an Hour and 15 minutes to dyno and tune the PCIII. My numbers are 70 hp and 75 ft lbs. Mechanic said the canned map was too rich and with this tune I should do better on mileage. First tank through I averaged 42 mph!!!!

Sounds logical. I've been concerned about the SERT and their expertise all along because they kept telling me PCIII was the way to go. I'm hoping someone will recommend a Race Tuner along the route I'm taking an a few.

40 would be great! I may try the Screamin' Eagle triple platinum V plugs. Can't hurt.

Maybe I could read the SERT manual and try to make some adjustments. I'd probably screw it up. Just a bit frustrated here!

Depanding on how your bike was tuned I was told the best AFR is 14.7. However this level will produce reduced gas milage. I also know that true dual exhaust are very difficult to tune properly and no two tuners have the same opinion on how to properly tune true duals. So one of the most common seen practices is to tune them rich.

I was also having the same issue when I went with V&H true duals. I have since switched to a V&H Propipe and had my bike retuned. I would not call this an act of an inexperienced tuner. It is more of a practice. It would be hard for any two bikes to get the same results as one another even with the same mods. Other factors always come into play, like climate. Dry air verses humid air, alt, ect..... I did not like the performance of true duals so, I switched to a 2-1 which is the best setup for performance no matter how much some people will argue this fact. So check with your tuner and ask them if they can back a little. If they can do it, and your bike still runs good, I can tell you that your gas mileage will improve.

I put a link to my dyno chart above and it shows AFR at 13. I like to tour and usually solo so performance is not an issue. I can climb from 4400 ft (SLC) to Parleys summit 7000ft and hold 80MPH. 2-up and I need 4th gear to do that. With or without this last upgrade. I'm more interested in MPG as I'm not sure other than looks and noise that there was any improvement.

This is all good info, Thanks

The BEST AFR for bagger's will give you performance (for your particular mods), WITHOUT compromising fuel economy. A tuner that dials in more fuel (wasting it!) than actually required is lazy, inexperienced or both. No way that is just common practice. Different story if ya got a cammed out, high rpm, big inch, bar hoppin' stroker. A pro tuner WILL be able to tune ANY bike precisely no matter what pipes or mods you run with. No one should have to settle for anything less.

I wouldn't worry about the hp/tq #'s as any tuner can just about make you see any number they wanna.

6Hr on a dyno is alot of time. The average is 2 to 3 tops maybe 4 hrs. I would definetly look into another tuner.
