I have 15000 miles on my 08 Electra Glide Classic and during the last week my garage smells like gas after I ride. I ride to and from work everyday and its just over the last week that this started. I did not spill any gas, I cant find any leaks, and there is nothing dripping on the floor. I had the 10,000 mile service done at the dealer in January, and changed my own oil last weekend when I hit 15000. Any ideas on what I can check?
posssibly overfilled oil resivoir and breather tube is pulling overflow out and depositing it in your air cleaner. Pull football and check air cleaner to see if oily.
A cheap and quick fix might be your fuel line check valve under the left side panel....if it's the same as my 99. Fixed my problem, is cheap and quick to change.
Okay... I know this may sound lame, but check your gas cap. I had one that cracked, and for weeks I couldn't figure out where the gas smell was coming from. I wasn't riding every day, so the next fill up I found the gas cap cracked, replaced it, and no more gas smell.....
I had the same problem on a 94 SuperGlide (FXR). Turned out there was a fault in a gas tank weld just under the console. Couldn't see it until the console was removed. The hairline crack was leaking just enough to get damp, but not drip gas. The scoot was brand new and the dealer replaced the tank under warranty with a brand new tank from the factory.
I had the same problem happen on my 96 Evo. As I recall and after a whole lot of searching and sniffing it turned out that a very small amount of gas was dripping out of my overflow tube. Not enough to make it to the floor but moistening the swingarm under the tube end. The cause was that when I installed a new battery I pinched the line/tube going to the check valve thus not allowing pressure in the tank to be released and causing fumes and a small amount of gas to go into and out of the overflow tube. I always top off my tank about one mile from the house so the tank was always full when in my garage.
Use the old nose meter for close checks to see if you can determine where the odor is the strongest. If it is the check valve not working you, like in my case, may also get the odor around the gas cap as well as the overflow.
My guess is that it is a small amount of gas that is coming out of the overflow tube. My tank will spit a bit out of the tube if I fill it all the way up. My guess is that you fill the tank all the way, a bit of gas is working its way out the overflow tube, but not enough to leave a spot on your floor when you are done. Nothing to worry about, it is normal if that is the case.
