Curb, Scrape...Kickstand down
I had the jiffy spring come loose 2 or 3 times on my '05 EGC. I quickly learned to carry a spare in the saddle bag. It's a $5 part and easy to replace but if you don't have a spare you can be in a pickle.
I could install it with just my Leatherman tool. Have a friend sit on the bike and put the jiffy stand UP. Lay next to the bike and hook one end, then the other using the pliers. You have to muscle it just a bit but it's not that bad.
Usually it's cuz you hit a speed bump or go over a curb or whatever that catches the spring and makes one end come loose or sometimes BREAKS the spring, so that's why I suggest you carry a spare. If you don't need it then eventually a riding buddy might need it so you can be the hero of the day if you've got one.

After you get the spring on check out this site http://www.kickstandkaddy.com/Purchase.php I just put mine on today, five minutes. Extra springs and bungee are great but you better have tools and someone to hold the bike up.
