Since it is used on the offset lever only, it provides the spacer needed to level out the chrome cover over it.

Also, I have the helm joint on the inside up front as instructions describe, with the bolt from the outside and stock nut on the inside and have enough clearance on the cooling fins on the jug. I also prefer to have both chrome bolt heads matching on the outside. Having it on the inside also provides a straighter angle from front to back levers and for me, feels more solid than having it on the outside of the front lever. I've had it both ways, there's really no wrong way as long as you have clearance and components are snugged properly.

The cover fits flush on the lever without the spacer. The hole also lines up. Do not wish to have a washer in the transmission. If this is indeed how it assembles, I believe I will "cement" the washer to the back of the cover with some weatherstrip adhesive. Just don't want to chance dropping that washer. The instructions I have also says to mount the front helm joint to the outside for my 09 ultra, although I see your point on being matchy matchy with the bolt heads.

Yeah, like I said no real wrong way as long as it's snug and no clearance issues. My instructions say to mount helm joint on inside of front lever (which I prefer due to the straight angle of the linkage) and the rear chrome cover requires the washer to fit offset levers, if the rear cover is the flat one, no washer required. Mine has the offset, and washer fits snug and keeps from bending the cover inward because of the offset when tightening. Whatever works for us best is all good. As an added mention, I got the complete HD chrome linkage which comes with the helm joints and bolts. I used the helm joints and bolts, put the stock ball joints on the chrome rod in the kit and put it away in my bag for a complete assembly replacement should the need arise on the road. I've seen two issues of stock ball joints fail in the past, they had some miles on them but I've never seen or experienced failures on the helm joints.

Hook up the front one first then the back & make sure it's the same length as the old one or do some adjusting. Done Happy Motoring

Had to mount to the front at both ends. Will not clear the jug if mounted to the back, even with the old flat factory nut.
