Default adding an ebay - batwing fairing to my RK

If I bought a fairing from Ebay. Most offer the outer shell only and I found another guy who has the inner part. Are they interchangable parts like front fenders will fit 94 thru 08? and what if I wanted to add gauges to it? how about some idea's.
Don't want to spend 1500. on the others if I don't have to.

Sorry I don't have the answer to your question, but I am interested in your project. When it comes time be sure to post your progress and the finished product.

I am in same boat...would much rather get a stock Harley fairing for my RKC as opposed to spending $1,500+ for an aftermarket.

I have done tons of research and am trying to e-mail the question of putting an OEM Harley fairing on a Road King to as many people as I can.

Keep us posted and I'll do the same!

I guess we have at least a few people thinking the same way. I know I could do the Ipod with an amp and 2 6x9's up front and maybe some twitters on the fairing. Big question is mounting brakets for the RK ?

The inner and outer fairings are compatable across model years 97 to 07...perhaps even earlier. In 08 the inner fairing design changed slightly to allow for the accomodation of adjustable air deflectors which are secured with 4 screws. Earlier years had fixed type air deflectors with 3 screws. Those were basically cosmetic changes and shouldn't influence the batwing dimensions in anyway. Other thing to consider is that HD changed the plastics in '06. They began using a GTX Nylon as opposed to the earlier plastic. If it were me, I'd try to keep the inner and outer fairings at least consistent with regard to the changes in plastics. As far as adding gauges is concerned, you can go all the way and convert your bike completely to an Ultra if you were so inclined. Obviously you're going to need the hardware, wiring harness, handlebars, cables, etc. to do it. In all reality, your RK handlebars will not work with a batwing. Taking all of that in to account, if you're trying to keep the tab under $1,500 I'd say that you'll probably exceed it. Buying inexpensive parts off eBay (takeoffs) will help, but the bill adds up quickly....as I'm sure you know. Don't forget to factor in the cost of gauges...stereo, switches....yaditty...yaditty, yaditty..ya. Good luck. Let us know how things work out with your project.

Hey there

I think the big thing to remember about the aftermarket fairings is that your bike stays convertible! No windscreen, windscreen, or fairing--your choice for that days ride and easy to change. With the stock HD parts, you would lose that without custom fabrication that adds to that price.

I own a Hoppe Quadzilla fairing--thats a well built unit. About 18 months ago, I was asked to help design/supply what is the audio system on Kuryakyns new clip on. Seeing all the work that went into this thing and all the features it has, I do believe this is the nicest unit on the market--but at $2300, it better be!

I guess my point is that RKC is the coolest bike out there (i just got an 09 Sunglo red/smokey gold)--so take advantage of the fact you can you make your bike what you want, when you want it!--PEZ

TDA69 that's is great info, I didn't think about the handle bars at all. The gauges for me aren't really as important as listening to the tunes or the sound of the motor and pipes. Looks like aftermarket might really be the best choice for the money. Thanks for chimming in.

I know there's a lot of guys out there with the same thoughts in mind. I was exactly where you are, a little over a year ago. I was doing a ton of research, and trying to figure out how I could use a stock HD fairing and adapt it to my RK. Luckily, I found a Dead Center Fairing in the Forum Classified's. Used slightly, but in perfect shape. Saved over $1000 from what it would have cost me new with all the options. I don't mind taking on these projects, but tda69 made a very valid point about the expense adding up very quickly. My math last year to do what you're talking about had me at about $1000 before paint. If you can paint, or have a good friend that can paint, that might be an acceptable option. But know it will get expensive fast to do the total conversion with gauges, wiring harnesses, mounting brackets, chrome, etc.... You might be better off shopping for a good used model of one the major mfgs. With Ebay, Craigslist, Forum Classifieds, all the internet forums for used parts, you might just get lucky. I did. And I'm very pleased with what I ended up with. Just my $.02 for what it's worth. Good Luck

By the time you buy the scratched outer fairing and inner fairing on e bay and painted it, than added the brackets to attach the fairing, replaced your head light, mounting bracket and chrome ring for one that screws to the outer fairing not to the front end, rewired the whole bike in the fairing instead of in the light, bought all the guages, changed the gas tank (because the speedo is in the fairing instead of the tank, etc, etc, it would be alot cheaper to buy an aftermarket quick release fairing.
I just saw a RK with a quick detach fairing and thought it looked alot better than the stock set up. (don't tell other SG owners)
Maybe you can find a used detach fairing.
