Motorcycle GPS
I bought their hard wire kit that can be used with any 12 vehicle.
It does come with a thing that steps down the voltage in picture
it is the black box the wiring goes through.
Spec's as follows
Input = 10 - 30 Vdc / Max. 1A
Output = 4.9 - 5.25 Vdc / 1A
Fuse type = 1.0A

Found a power plug on the internet that is shorter than the Garmin one with the FM transmitter.
Would like to get a Scala Q2 so I could have GPS instuctions in the helmet but it appears to not work with NUVIs
On a fine sunny afternoon, no wind, in an area where you have lots of options, anything works. Use whatever you want.
I found myself in a severe thunderstorm trying to make 12 miles to a hotel in North Carolina because it was only going to get worse overnight. It was dark, foggy, high wind gusts, and the rain was falling so hard it was bouncing up off the highway. Visibility was somewhere between 7 and 10 feet. I was crouched down trying to get some cover from the windshield and look for the exits...couldn't see schidt. (Not one of my more stellar moments...)
The Zumo 550 was bright, clear, easy to read, read down the "feet until exit" smooth - I never saw the exits - just turned off when it said to in heavy mist...same way with all the off-highway turns all the way until I cruised up to the front door of the Marriott.
That was the first trip I'd had it on, and it proved to me that under the worst circumstances the thing performed exactly as I would have expected it to...and the waterproof buttons worked great to adjust the display. I wouldn't have been as happy, I don't think, trying to use another non-WP unit beneath a plastic ziplock bag.
It saved my butt that day, and I don't go touring anymore without it. I also ride with the Patriot Guard, and I'm regularly entering addresses to areas I've never been before - saves a lot of time NOT getting lost. (The Zumo is connected to the left-side switch on my 2004 Road King Custom.)
I've found I can depend on it. (But you do need to download those updates.....)

Doc

Seems it could be kept portable, or be integrated on a more custom/semi-permanent basis w/ a cig cord they sell...

Any thoughts on set ups like this? What are the issues some are having getting all their gadgets to integrate the way they want?

Back to the discussion ... WOW ... Doc Intrepid ... that is one helluva endorsement for the Zumo 550. I was ready to spend $225 to $250 on a 4.3" car until like the Nuvi 760 or 780, but after reading your horror tale I have to take a 2nd look at the 550. Not sure I'm ready to spend the extra $400, though. Decisions ... decisions ... decisions.
I kind of wish there were a way to "test drive" these units. I'd love to take the Nuvi out against the Zumo to really test their muscle. I wonder why some of the rider magazines haven't done something on this ... or have I jsut missed it?
