I had the detachable on my '05 EGC and liked it alot. I rarely had the TP on the bike but WOW was it nice when needed. Plus it's only a 5 minute install to put the TP on when you need it. I didn't wire the lights or rear speakers very often, just snapped the TP on and rode. I like the looks of the bike without it for everyday riding. I never had any looseness or rattling with it by the way.
My '09 RK has a detachable leather RK tourpak for it also now. It's not been used yet but for a road trip you can be sure it'll be on there!
Do you guys recommend two people when installing the tour pak detach kit?
Absolutely! One guy can monitor the radio, open the drinks, and read the instructions.....while the one with the common sense does the job. Really, not a two person requirement. But if you've got a bud that wants to spend some quality time listening to you cuss a blue streak, then go for it. That's how these Bromance's blossom.
Have the dealership undo the five nuts on the bottom of the tour pak that secure it to the permanent mount and you can leave the TP with them and ride out with your bike. Simple.
One note about the detachable tour pack.
If you do go detachable, then you should get the locking mechanisim.
Harley part # 46063-98
Only one caveat: You will need to either shorten the length of the key or bend it at about a 45 degree angle.
If you don't i get jamed between the tourpack and the mechanism.

I think it depends on how much weight you'll be loading it with, I have a chopped tour pack on my Roadglide with detachable docking have over 22k miles on it with no issues. A friend of mine has a Streetglide and he got the King Tour pack with detachables and has had the black plastics break 3 times last summer, but he also loads his tour pack up and on the trip to WI he also had a bag strapped to the luggage rack on the top of the tour pack. On that same trip I had the Harley back seat tourbag so nothing was on the top of my chopped tour pack. Mostly I just use the chopped tour pack to hold 2 half helmets and gloves,goggles,ect.. I'm thinking if you are looking to get a full size tour pack, add a rack and fill the tour pack and have an added bag on top the plastic bushings they mount on will not last. Also my friends lower fender mounts (metal) cracked and he had to have them replaced.

Reason: spelling.. d'oh
This pretty well sums up my thoughts. I ride my bike as primary transportation daily. I was pretty spoiled on having the storage space of the tour-pak, but I've found that I can fit most anything into a saddlebag. My tour-pak only goes on for road trips now. It is like having two bikes.
