I recently had a set of ape hangers installed on my Heritage Softail Springer Classic and they wont stay tight. I have tried to tighten them several times and after a week or so they come loose again. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try to get these things to stay tight? I have tried Locktit and it doesn't seem to help. Thanks for your help!
Does the ape hangers have the ridges on where it meets the neck? I have heard several different remedies for this problem. One is using sand paper folded in half with the sand side facing the surface area between the neck and handle bars. I've also heard of people cuttng a strip of coke can and inserting the aluminum strip between the bars and neck. Maybe some others can chime in with better solutions. Good luck.
Rather than use a strip from a coke can, I think you would have better success using a strip off a beer can. Either one will work fine...I ended up taking the clamps off mine and grinding a couple thou off them to get a little more squeez on the bar...haven't had them come loose since.
When mine started doing that, I just cut a couple pieces of a latex glove, like surgical gloves and wrapped around the bars at the clamp. Hasn't come loose since.
