hey all, new guy here but a long time forum reader. I have a 07 road king custom and recently bought the quadzilla fairing. Has anyone found decent replacement speakers that fit this odd size, 5'' round. have seen many 5 1/4" but the grilles would be too big for the speaker area on the fairing. Any ideas?
thanks,
Gary
Polk Audio makes a really nice 5" speaker called the dB501. It is a true 5" speaker. They also make a dB521 that is a great replacement for oem 5.25". I have a friend that replaced his on his Electra Glide Classic and added a set of lower fairings with boxes. He put a second set in the boxes.
Don't know where you are located, but Crutchfield ships all over. I saw earlier that they have a special on theh Polk Audio models: Buy one pair, get one pair at half off! Might be worth checking out. I have the Polks in my boat and would highly recommend them!!!
What I did was take the old speakers and cut the grills off the speakers (one piece) and put them on the inner fairing and the new 5.25 speakers behind the inner fairing. I went with Toxic speakers and a ARC amp. works great now and still kept the chrome grills.
i use a cut wheel to cut out the grill and a sharp knife to cut the speaker diaphram all the way around. looked great and didnt need any touch up.
If you have a West Marine boat store or other boat store check it out. That's where I picked mine up and they sound and work great. I forget the brand I looked at so many - I think JBL or Polk something like that.
thanks guys! I looked at cutting the speakers apart and just reusing the grilles. Looks to be my only option as the polk speakers in crutchfield in the 5" size don't come with the grilles. Anyone know of a place that sells chrome speaker grilles in a 5" size? would hate to buy the complete speakers from Hoppe and cut them apart for the grille.
gtesch-is there a specific problem you're trying to address? Just curious because a lot of times folks spend big $$$ to replace speakers of all types-OEM Harley, aftermarket, whatever, only to be still disappointed. Any speaker in the 5"-6" cone range will sound best at high volume only if you decrease the bass and turn up the treble. This is because a lot of distortion at higher volume is from the radio itself. Next to volume, bass requires the most energy to produce (longer wavelength/furthest cone movement) so when you ask for volume AND bass you are running the radio's amps at the max and that causes distortion that can make speakers sound worse than they really are. The bass you turn down is blocked from the tweeters by the crossover anyway so you'll get the same higher freq. response at a lower power usage
If you find really good speakers rated for much moreload than the reciever can produce you'll get great sound but not much of it, and at highest volumes you'll still have the reciever distortion (faithfully reproduced by your speakers) forcing you to add an amp to power them. One benefit of some pricier speakers is higher efficiency ratings so you can get more sound/watt. Anyway, I'm getting long-winded here and I meant these comments in general, not at any specific fairing/speaker brand. Those speakers you have really are pretty good and your sound already beats a stock Street Glide hands-down so I would hate to see you disappointed after spending a lot of $$$.
My last post I would only put Baffles in behind the speakers. The speakers are a great set-up that come with the fairing... Turn of the loundness button when turning up the volume..........THAT WAS GREAT HOPPE SPEAKERS, MIS-SPELLING ON ABOVE TITLE, I WOULD NOT UPGRADE YOUR SPEAKERS...

Reason: SPELLED WRONG
Thanks for the replies. i will try adjusting the bass and treble settings and see how that works. may try the baffles when I pull fairing apart again to reclear the inner.
Glenn, got your pm and will give you a buzz.
thanks
