I have been riding for many yrs. But for some reason the last few weeks I have had this bad gut feeling when riding. I live in IL, and wow we have had are share of motorcycle deaths lately. A few weeks ago a large group of bikes was on a ride on a early Saturday morning, there was a car waiting turn turn letting the bikes go by, a car from behind rearend the waiting cars pushing the car waiting into the group of bikes killing 6 riders. The thing about that accident that really sticks with me is 2 of the riders killed where a married couple with 2 kids at home. That weekend alone we had 9 bikers killed, all by no fault of there own.
Not sure why I posted this I guess I am thinking outloud with some fellow bikers. Ride safe. Al
I know how you feel, I live in Illinois also, and it has been an epidemic as of late....a friend of mine that I work with got in an accident a couple of weeks ago, and almost lost his leg over it. The part that pisses me off is the guy that hit him was drunk, and didn't get a DUI because the cop on the scene was his buddy.....that is small town politics for ya!!!!
You can't ride in IL right now without having "second thoughts" going through your head. You can either use them to stay frosty and keep your senses open or you can let them keep you from riding.
Neither is wrong - I'm certainly in no position to tell someone to "ignore it" and I'd hope no one would push me either. And no one can blame anyone around here for feeling skittish - It's just nuts this year - Experienced riders, too. Really stupid stuff. The lady who was doing her nails killing a rider stopped at a signal. I know a guy who was taken down while stopped by a 17 year old kid. Totaled his bike (thankfully, he was only banged up a bit and is already out and about on his '09 SG).
And depending on where you are - Heck, I have to go for a bit of a ride just to get somewhere worth going for a ride. Lots of surface streets with idiots on them, expressways with some of the craziest drivers in the country, most of them on their phones - or texting.
In any case, don't ignore your gut... That "sixth sense" is there for a reason. You can let it "rule" you, or you can let it "guide" you.
