I just bought 5 qts. Mobil1 15/50 synthetic for my crank case, $22.00 at Wal-Mart, 2 qts. Castrol GTX 10/40 for my primary, of couse it only takes 38 ozs. with wet change, but now I am worried about using 75/90 in my trans because even though today is 76, it is not unusual to go 30 days with the thermometer not getting above 60. Up here in Alaska I ride when it is 8 below as long as the roads are dry and at 8 below, they are. So do some of you pro's think I should stick to 20/50 Mobil1 syn for my trans? I'm thinking 75/90 is to thick. What are your thoughts friends?
You wont go wrong with Mobil 1 20-50 in the crank, In the Tanny 75-90 is a good starting point, If you ride the bike hard or ride where it is very hot you may want to up it to a 75-110 or 75-140. As for oil filters, there is no specific spesification guide lines as like there is for rating oil, so for measuring there effectiveness one manufactures 5 micron is another's 15, Best suggestion is use a good name brand and change it often, Cheap insurance. In the primary use what ever you want but change it often to help flush out clutch material.
As for alaska I think I would stay with 20-50 in the tranny, May be a bit noiser but it will not hurt it.
Mobil1 15-50 Synthetic $26.00 5qt. jug from Wal-Mart. Change every 5K miles.
Mobil1 75-90 Synthetic Tranny Oil $8.00 any auto parts store. Change once a season.
Castrol GTX 10-40 Dino $2.50qt for Primary from Wal-Mart. Change once a season. Using a synthetic in the primary is simply a waste of a good synthetic oil and a waste of money. Primary oil is not intended for lubrication. It is a coolant.
HD Super Premium Oil Filters. I buy 6 at a time from either Chicago HD or Zanottis online @ 20% off. Your filter is the weakest link in your lubrication cycle, why scrimp on it? It has the best filtering rating of any filter on the market. Change every 2500 miles.
Dayum, I luv oil threads.
Ditto... good advice and these are all easily found.
