i use the black hd one. chrome doesn't get rid of heat nearly as well as the black. and k%n filters are made in china. screw that nut on the end, and go to autozone and get a good cup type wrench that fits the harley filter. that's a whole $3.99 chroming an oil filter makes about as much sense as chroming a toilet. this has been my way of thinking anyway, your results may vary.
I hear guys saying this filter is good or that filter is good but if I press them how they came to this conclusion not one person has been able to give me a good reason.
My take on it is this, the HD filter isnt going to break the bank and it was made to fit the application. i.e. my bike. I have to make a small assumption here, but I feel a realistic one, and that is that the engineers who designed the lubrication system for my bike know a damn sight more about it than I, so for me its got to be the HD black filter.
Its not just about filtration, different filters may well have different pressure settings on their bypass valve, and unless I was sure that filter 'A' matched the HD specs exactly I wouldn't change. The question also begs if the specs are the same as the HD filter why change. I know the nut on the end of the K&N filter is a nice idea, but I have never had a problem removing a filter I have fitted. (I have struggled a bit on the filter fitted at the dealer 1000 service, and suspect that it was put on too tight, but they are always going to fit a HD filter anyway so its a moot point). If its about price, well an extra $5 - $6 every 5000 miles isnt going to be an issue for most.
I suspect if we knew how often the filter was in bypass mode we would all be horrified, but the bikes still keep rolling for 100,000 miles plus.
I seem to remember seeing a article where someone cut various filters open and I think as far as quality went there were only a couple of duffers, but I cant remember who made those now.
I'm all for change but not just for changes sake. Of course if someone brighter than I can convince me otherwise I'm all ears................
Its not another oil thread! Im wondering what kind of filter guys are running? Is it amsoil ect that you are using? Or it just a factory HD oil filter you are using? I know it isnt mandatory to use a special fitler Im just wondering if you do and does amsoil or other synthetic oil producers sell chrome ones?
You can't see the filter on a Ultra . so I use a black Fram 6022 from Advance Auto Parts. I was raised on Fram oil filters. I only use synthetic oil . Duane #617849 08 Blue Ultra Born 8-02-07
