Default Tire PSI & mileage

I still have the factory tires on my 05 Road King. The tire says maximum 40 psi. What is recommended in the owner's manual? Also how many miles should I get on the front and rear tires?

Go by the tire manufacturer's recommendations on max psi. I run 38 psi just to be on the safe side, especially is hot weather. Assume you have an owner's manual......look it up. As far as mileage, much depends on how you ride and what load is on the bike. Typical rear tire mileage with the new Dunlop compound is about 13K.....front tire wear is usually at least 22K. I run Dunlop tires and have for 14 years.......can't say about the other makers.

I have an owner's manual but I don't have it here at work. Last week while I was riding it felt like the back tire was sliding on every turn I made. I put air in the tires to 40PSI but it's still doing it. I only have 7000 miles on the tires.

I'm not too small either, but it's all muscle. I think I will do 40 and 40.

Check the tread. If you've got adequate tread you shouldn't be sliding around corners with 36-40 lbs in the tire. Adding more air isn't going to fix that problem. Also check your shocks, heavy weight on soft shocks will affect cornering greatly. You should have at least 5-10 lbs air in them. I run 15 lbs. two-up and 20 , two up with luggage but you need to experiment.

Good info here.

What's the shape of the tread, is it flattened out in the middle yet? If so, it may feel funny when you get over on the corner of it. I know mine acted that way. New tire solved my problem. You wouldn't think 7,000 miles is too much but if it's mostly interstate, it'll wear more in the center of the tread and tend to square it off in the center.

40 in front might make it too bouncy. 36 should be fine.
