O.K. Guys heres what happend. I have Rinehart True Duals with a Power Commander lll and a big sucker air cleaner.
Today got on my bike and I was cruiseing along at 55mph when my cruise control just shut off.
So I tried to reset and nothing happened. I shut off the cruise control and back on and it worked O.K.
Got to my destination and stayed for a while then left. On the way home got back up to highway speed and set the cruise control and was cruiseing and then the cruise shut off again and back fired and then all was dead. No power at all. I pulled into a parking lot.
I would push the odometer button on the side of the console and the odometer would barely flash and then go blank. Then had nothing at all. Called for help with a trailor waited about 5 minutes and locked bike up and just happen to push the odometer button again and the mileage came on. So, I unlocked turned ignition everything powered up and bike started.
What do you think happened, power commander got wet? There was a lot of rain and moisture in the air the day before.
i wouldn't just assume that it was the power commander at fault here, esp. with the odometer doing weird ****. my first guess would be loose battery connections. if those check out, then check the ecm connections, and do a load test on your battery.
Did you get a check engine light? I had a similar thing happen with the cruise control, but mine threw a check engine light which was read by the dealer as a malfunctioning cruise control switch. They replaced the switch and no issues since then.
I would also check the PC connections for water, you could have an intermittent short. Dilectric grease!
Yea I can't imagine the plug wires and I only mention the odometer to point out that everything was DEAD, I mean it was to the point that I had to reset my clock!
a basic maintenance inspection done at home will probably show what the problem is. it always pays to check the stupid stuff first. lots of guys haul their bikes to a shop to get diagnosed and fixed when it turned out to be a loose battery connection, or ground. a bad fuse, or something that you could have found by studying your bike. hope you get it back up and running dependably.
Well I looked at the battery and the connections seemed good and tight. I did take the connections apart clean and re-attach them. Its hard to tell what it was now that all seems to be working well.
