Need a little help here. I have an 09 Ultra and I don't have the manuals yet. I need to rotate my handlebar a bit and in order to do that, I need to remove the **** and inner fairing. Can someone please give me the instructions (step by step, as per the manual) on how to remove and re-install the ****? It may be easier for this good samaritan to scan the page(s) and post it here. TIA
1. Insert key and turn bars to full left
2. Use a flat screwdriver or your finger if you can get it under to push up on the small tab, once depressed turn the key about 1/3 of a turn to the left and the chrome switch will turn to the left and pull up. There will be a spring under be careful.
3. Remove nut and both spacers
4. Gently pull straight up on the thin label plate and it should come right off.
5. From there you should be able to get to it.
I can't remember for sure but, I think you can get to the bolts by just removing the outer fairing. Not sure though.

You will have to remove the outer fairing to get the radio out, and also remove the inner fairing cap, not the entire inner fairing. Then you can reach the 4 handlebar clamp pinch bolts.
Once you have the fork lock off there is an easy way to put it back on. Turn the bars all the way to the left and stick your flat head screw driver in the hole and turn counter clock wise until the forks lock. Once you have the forks locked to the left you are half way home. In short once you have the fork lock drop the unit in the hole and rotate the unit clockwise. Usually it's a couple the postions until it drops from the word fork lock. Pull out the unit and install your screw driver down the hole no more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Then turn the upper tubbler as many clicks as it toook for the unit to drop. Once you re install the unit make sure your key is in and at least 60 degrees beyond the unlock position. Drop it in the hole and it should work.
One thing: take out the screws to the switch housing BEFORE you start.
BTW, you can adjust the bars removing just the switch housing if you are careful and have either a ball end 1/4" socket, or can carefully push the edge of the inner fairing back enough to get a regular allen in the bolt. The two inner (closest to the rider) bolts are the "pinch" bolts for the bars, once those are loosened, you can rotate the bars.

If you take the lock off correctly, you don't need to put anything in the lock to rotate the tumblers to put the lock back on.

Oh good point, I misread and was addressing removal of the bars. Just went through this this past weekend, changing my stock FLHT bars for a set of 16" apes. What a f'n PITA that project was....
I have 2006 HD Ultra Classic touring. I been having trouble with my ignition switch. Sometimes when I turn the **** nothing happens and when it does work and I'm going down the highway the engine and security key light comes on so I pull over, stop, shut down and then turn the **** off and then back on and start up and go on my way. I'm thinking it's the ignition switch assembly that needs replacing. Does any one know for sure and if this is correct how do I remove the assembly to replace. Thanks Dale
