My buddy just bought a 2006 Ultra Classic from a dealer in Northern Illinois on Tuesday 6/27/2006 and requested that they install a Rinehart full system and a PCIII before taking delivery. After they finished the install of the exhaust and PC they rolled the bike off the lift and loaded it into a trailer for delivery to him. They never test rode the bike before delivery. A few days into riding his new bike he began to complain about how slow it was compared to his 2005 Fat Boy. I told him it was in his head until I finally took it for a spin on 7/1/2006. The bike was ideling like crap and felt like it was starting out in third gear from a stop. It was horrible. I called the dealer on his behalf and began to yell at them about the issue. They told me to have him bring the bike in immediately. After they looked at the bike they determined it is an oil pressure issue and the engine needs to be torn apart. They convienently offered him a discount on a 1550 kit for the bike which I told him to pass on. He wants the 1550 for free or a new bike. They don't seem to be willing to do either. I don't know what they are going to do for him but he is pissed and really regrets buying this bike.
What the hell, it's gotta be fixed, that's what a warranty is for! Why not take the discount on the big bore at the same time? His bike, his decision, why would YOU call the dealer on HIS behalf and begin yelling at them? That in itself is absolutely ridiculous and insulting. A new bike or a free big bore, get real!
Well, that is rather scary. I took delivery of my new '06 Ultra on 6/27 also. Yeeks!! Mine seems to be doing great. Here's the skinny. They gotta fix the bike, no way around it. Were they negligent in not test riding it prior to delivery?? Certainly. I made sure they had ridden mine. Your buddy's best option, IMHO, is to take the discount on the 1550 kit and ride on down the road. The waranty is behind him so, although it is a pisser, he is going to be alright in the end. It just puts a cloud over what should be a happy time for him. Good luck!!
Oil pressure issue? Didn't the oil pressure gauge show a problem?
My advice: Give them the chance to make it right. Ask them to install the big bore kit for Parts Less 20%. No Labor since they've got to tear it apart anyway. That's about what your buddy could buy the parts for online.
DISCLAIMER: My advice is worth just what you paid for it.
After I got my new 06 Ultra, I noticed the oil pressure would drop almost to 0 when it was hot and at idle. Dealer I bought it from replaced the sensor and it was better but still low. Bike seemed not to have any power either. Took it to another dealer and they found a cut o-ring on the oil pump. It was causing the crankcase to fill with oil and not be returned. After the fix no more oil pressure probems and it runs like a raped ape.
Another thing I find hard to believe about this story is the statement that it was NOT test ridden. Brand new bike, new pipes, PCIII, nothing mentioned about a dyno. I know my dealer test rides each bike before delivery, that is just common sense!
Most of the Harley dealers in the Chicago area are worthless. And yes I can say this with experience. There may be one good one out there. But I have been riding for 35 years. And I have not found one yet. Bob.[:@]
There probably would have been a better outcome if the owner of the bike talked to the dealer, not some friend calling and yelling
I too find it hard to believe that a brand new out of the crate bike would not be test rode before being delivered. Especially one that had a new tune installed (PC III). If that the truth, then those mechanics should be working at ToysRUS instead of a HD dealership.
Now if the dealer is going to give a heavy discount on the SE 1550 kit, make sure the HTCC heads are included. Labor should be free, since the motor has to be taken apart...........
But that begs the question: Would you want these nitwits working on your bike?

RE: Brand New ultra already in for engine work !!
I came from the world of sportbikes and race tracks originally. Aftermarket exhausts and PC IIIs are everywhere on that side of the isle. It is not unheard of to get the occasional faulty PC III. It can kill the performance, make for intermittent running problems, etc. One thing to trouble shoot these possible issues is to disconnect the PC III and see how the bike runs. If required, the stock exhaust can be put back on so that normal driveability should be restored if the problem is caused by the PC III.
