Rent the ones you may be interested in. I found that the Road King was more to my liking. On that note, not a problem dividing time between 2. The Deuce is mostly my everyday bike and the King is for 2 up and road trips. But I have the luxury of "what do I feel like today?!"
2Duece has what I consider to be the coolest looking new Harley out there, but I put on too many highway miles in the winter for that little windscreen. When I bought the ultra I was sure I would be getting a RK. I rode both and realized how nice the full fairing and lowers were. My commute each day is 30 minutes to work and an hour plus on the way home. I have to admit I have grown to love the radio as well.
I do ride the hog everywhere, to the store, out to dinner, any reason I can find. It can be a pain to push it back from some parking spots, but not so much that anyone else would notice. Having said all that, I will admit, as soon as I sell my GP project car I plan on building another chop for cruise nights and the shows, but the bottom line is I would never be without a dresser again.
Of and my wife LOVES the backrest. She was always a good sport about riding on the Panhead, but that was a lot of years ago, lol.
where do you see yourself in a few years. I suspect your current buying may be the deciding factor. I took advantage of the Sportster buy in program so was able to get my money all back on the trade. I thought similarly that the touring bike would be less enjoyable in town solo... however I have not found that to be the case. In fact I can ride under more diverse weather conditions, and I can ride it to pick up relatively small packages etc. I could not do on the sportster... so I ride more. Now that's a good thing. If you have a touring model I suspect your touring range will expand exponentially. I know when weathwer breaks mine will. Enjoy the ride.
