Default Stage I Download

Is it really necessary to add an aftermarket fuel controller if I only plan on doing air cleaner, and true duals. I have heard negative things about the factory stage I download, and I definately don't want to risk detonation. BTW, I have '06 FLHXi w/25º injectors, if that makes any difference.

Yes.

Anytime you open up the air filter and change the exhaust..........you need to add more fuel to the mix.

The HD download is a waste of $150.

Get a Power Commander IIIusb for $277 delivered from Eastern Performance, and you'll be good for now and whatever you do later.

PCIII/custom dyno map, great combo for performance/fuel economy....do it! No delayed start here.

I bought a used '03 Ultra Classic with 4300 miles on it. The original owner had a Stage 1 intake and exhaust installed and what ever the download that the dealer service department did. I replace the muffler with the original stock muffler because I didn't like it that loud. The bike is still running very good getting 50 to 51 mpg on a road trip.

I like performance but at today gas prices, I'm more concerned with mileage.

Seems to me that the download is not popular here.

I have a new 2006 FLHXI (25deg injectors) with slip-on mufflers and the SE air cleaner, with the Stage 1 download. My independent mechanic, who I've used and trusted for all the work on my last three bikes (12 years), has done literally hundreds of the downloads with no issues at all. I trust this guy, and his record speaks for itself. On the other hand, when I asked my dealer about their preferred method of fuel delivery modification, they said that all they use is the PCIII and a dyno tune for a cost of $650. Seems to me to be much more lucrative for the dealer. I inquired about a SERT, and the dealer steered me away from it.

I don't understand why folks say the download is a waste of money, if you don't plan on doing any future mods to your bike. My bike runs strong, with no hesitation, overheating, stalling, pinging, popping, backfiring, etc. I did the complete install myself (except the download, which was done by my mechanic) and save $900 over what the dealer would have charged me for slip-ons, air cleaner, PCIII and dyno.

One of the things the Stage I download does is to up the rev limiter. The newest Power Commanders can do that according to a note on their website. That means you can save the H-D flash and do it with the PCIII.

Not all bikes have an issue with the flash...but a lot do. It isn't the mechanic that sets it up...it is a computer download from HD. All bikes are built a little different and therefore some still run ok afterward.

Odds are, you will experience a problem. As many others had problems, so did I. I went with a PCIII and have never regretted it since.

Air cleaner, pipes, 95 inch dowload on 88 inch motor. My bike runs excellent, good power and fuel mileage.
